Ellsworth Morton Downs

E Morton Downs E. Morton DOWNS, 69, of 409 S. 26th St., South Bend, died at 1:47 a.m. today at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend. He had been ill several weeks. He was born Feb. 24, 1914, in Rochester to James and Ida HOWER DOWNS. His first marriage was to Helen STOOKEY SMITH. His second marriage was to Patricia ROBERTS SHAWHAN Sept.27, 1975. Both survive. He retired from Bendix in South Bend in 1977, having worked there 31 years. He was a member of Bendix Union Local 9. Surviving are the wife; two sons, James Morton DOWNS, Rochester, and Stephan DOWNS, U.S. Army, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; a daughter, Stephanie Lynn MOTLEY, Kansas City, Kan.; a step-son, Scott R. SHAWHAN, San Antonio, Texas; a step-daughter, Mrs. James (Susan SHAWHAN) AUSTIN, South Bend ten grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Howard (Marjorie) FRED, Rochester. A daughter, Diane [DOWNS]; two sisters, Ruth RICHARDSON and Leah SMILEY; a brother Clifford DOWNS, and a half-brother, Warren W. DOWNS, prceded in death. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, Rochester, the Rev. John PARKS officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Society or the Heart Association.
