Body Is Found By Employee

Born, raised and educated in Medina County, Elmer L. Clifford, 36, of New Pittsburg, was shot to death early yesterday morning at his service station near Ashland.

A burglar or burglars took about $750 and the former Medina Countian’s life.

The victim was found behind his Sohio Station, on the northeast side of the Rt. 250 and I-71 interchange by Robert Bush, an employee.

Police have issued a statewide alert for the driver of a late model semi rig, which was observed leaving the scene shortly after the murder.

Clifford had returned to his station to obtain gasoline for a stranded driver on I-71. He apparently walked in on the murderer. He was found dead with five bullets in his body.

A graduate of Chatham High School, Clifford had lived in Chatham until he was about 21 years old, according to his sister, Mrs. Lillian Damon, of 376 Baxter St., Medina. He has worked and lived near Wooster and Ashland since he left Medina County.

Funeral services will be held at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Ashland, Wednesday at 3 p.m. (EST), with the Rev. Andrew Kolarovsky and Rev. Gerald Durham officiating.

A member of the New Pittsburg Methodist Church, Clifford was also a member of the New Pittsburg Volunteer Fire Department.

The deceased is survived by his wife Wilma, whom he married in 1955, and daughters Debra and Cynthia, all at home.

Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Clifford of Litchfield; sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Springer of South Amherst and Mrs. Lilian Damon of Medina; brothers, Hayden of Spencer and Edward of Ashland.

Burial will be at New Pittsburg Cemetery.
