Emanuel was a private in the War of 1812 in the VA Militia. August 30, 1814 in the 6th Regiment, Captain Henry Steed's Company of Wood County, Virginia. He later transferred to Captain Davidson's Company. He mustered out February 22,1815.

Emanuel Dotson born about 1784 (probably in Shenandoah County, VA) and died between 1833 - 1840.

Emanuel was probably born while his father was in Shenandoah County, after the Revolutionary War. He probably came from Hampshire County to what was then Wood County in early 1800's with his father, Richard. He was married by John Davis to Mary Riddick on 19 Jun 1804 in Harrison Co, VA.

He is showing as head of household in 1810 for Wood County.

He resided on the left-hand branch of Arnold Creek in 1846, which later became part of Doddridge County, Virginia.

In 1850 Emanuel is apparently deceased and his widow is living with her son, Joseph. It appears in the 1850 Ritchie County census that his children are mostly living side by side.
