About Emily Jane Hough
Emily Jane and her family came to East Texas by way of train from Charlotte. She followed her brother John Franklin there. Emily Jane arrived in Texas by train, but all her belonging came by boxcar. She took everything with her (cattle, hogs and even wagons taken apart). They arrived in about 1882 or 1884, about 75 miles away from where Frank was living at the time. They lived in those covered wagons turned upside down for the first winter, until a house could be built. This story has been passed down through the relatives of Clarentine Hough. They first settled in Sulphur Springs, Franklin Co., Texas for about 6 yrs. then they moved to Minerals Wells, Parker Co., Tx. In 1891, they moved to Floyd Co with several other families. In 1900, they moved to a new town called Hereford. Their first house was a sod house. Dug out in the side of a hill. The settlers there first built a church. Emily married John Wesley Hough, who was her step-mother's (Clarentine Hough) brother. Her Father dis-owned her when she ran away and married John at 16. Emily never believed in electric lights, so she never used them. They are buried in Hereford, Texas.
