Bowral Free Press and Berrima District Intelligencer (NSW : 1884 - 1901) Wed 8 Oct 1890 Page 2 Distressing Accident. Distressing Accident. One of the most painful and melancholy accidents it has been our mission to report, befell Mrs. James Chapple at her residence a few miles out of Bowral on Monday morning. She was engaged in usual household duties-was sweeping in front of the fire, in fact--when the back portion of her dress (a print) caught fire. She quickly doubled, her skirts together and sat down on the ignited parts on a sofa, endeavoring to put the fire out by that means. Thinking she had succeeded, she got up again, and no sooner had she done this than the fire started again and got control of the unfortunate woman. She rushed outside, and made for the creek about 200 yards distant, and as she ran the breeze, fanned the flames. A man who was working near the creek rushed to her aid, and both plunged into the water. Dr. Wiison was sent for and on his arrival he found that the burns extended from the feet to the neck. A third of the skin of the entire body was burned and blistered, and in parts hung off in charred patches. Dr.Wilson did all that was possible for the patient, who retained consciousness.

Bowral Free Press and Berrima District Intelligencer (NSW : 1884 - 1901) Sat 15 Nov 1890 Page 3 Family Notices DEATH OF MRS. JAMES CHAPPLE. With feelings of regret we have to convey to our readers intelligence of the death of poor Mrs. James Chapple, who was so dreadfully burned a few weeks back by her clothes catching fire, particulars of which appeared in these columns at the time. The deceased lady was only 22 years of age, and was the wife of James Chapple, of Upper Mittagong. Little hopes were entertained of her recovery at the time of the accident, as the injuries were of a dreadful nature, in fact the medical gentleman who attended her states that he has never seen anyone so badly burned live for such a length of time. However, her robust constitution enabled her to rally for some time, and had it not been for the fact that she was at the time enceinte, she might probably have recovered.Strange to say fully three weeks after the accident occurred, the severe shock she received caused the premature birth of her child, and from this hour the result appeared inevitable. The poor woman bore her terrible suffering with great fortitude, and waited for the end with calmness and resignation. On Thursday death eased her of her pain, and deprived her two little children of maternal care. Great sympathy is felt for the relatives of the deceased, and the long period of suffering endured by the poor woman ensured the heartfelt regrets of every resident of the district. On Thursday, Mr. Hy Childs, J.P., held a magisterial inquiry at Upper Mittagong, into the cause of the death. Three witnesses were examined, and the medical evidence was to the effect that death resulted from blood poisoning intervening on injuries received by burning. A verdict in accordance with this evidence was returned. The deceased was interred yesterday afternoon at Upper Mittagong, the funeral cortege being the largest seen in the district for same time, friends coming from all parts to pay the last tribute of respect and sympathy to one who had been so suddenly and deplorably deprived of life in the zenith of her youth. The impressive ceremony of the Church of England was conducted by the Rev. D. T. Smith, and many floral tributes were placed in the grave by loving hands. The funeral was conducted by Mr. Allerdice in his customary high class style.
