Emma's husband Charles Robert Darwin was her first cousin, Emma was the daughter of his mothers brother, and they married on January 29 1839.

Doctor Erasmus Darwin, a successful physician and poet, inventor and slave-trade abolitionist joined with Josiah Wedgewood, founder of the pottery company Josiah Wedgwood and sons, to expand their wealth and influence. This led to several members of their two families marrying for several generations.
