Engebret Gulbrandsen Segelstad

In 1788 Øvre Segelstad was purchased by Engebret in auction after the death of lensmann Vestad for 1004 rd. Engebret had an older brother, Gulbrand, who would have inherited the family fortune but died at age 17 making Engebret the oldest son. Engebret was very rich when he bought the farm at auction. He became the first person to own the entire farm since 1731. He bought it in 1788 (upper) at auction after the death of lensman (administrative official of the country similar to a sheriff) Kristofer Vestad for 1004 rd. He had control of Lower Segelstad as well as Upper. He was a very wealthy man. His estate was very prosperous and he was not in debt to anyone.

1802 census lists 40 people living there including Engebret and brother Iver. Also brother Gulbrand and mother Mari Engebretsdatter.

Family of Iver and wife Mari, children Gulbrand and Mar Johansdatter Mo, next generation Johannes who was the first to settle in USA from this branch. All children came to Wisconsin and settled in New Richmond. Two children settled in Mpls. Many changed their name. Another group of Seilstads (name change) settled in LaCross branched out from Berit (Gulbrand and Marit's son and Eli's brother). Berit married Osten Olsen Strande. Their son Gulbrand Ostensen Segelstadsveen emigrated to USA and settled in LaCrosse.
