Lt. Thomas BARTLETT Born 1594 Died 26 Apr 1654 English Origin (Pelham's servant) Came to New England 1630 With the Winthrop fleet Resided in Watertown Freeman of MBC Mar 1634/35 Occupation farmer, soldier First Spouse Hannah (d 1676) Children Hannah (dy), Mehitable, Hannah, Bathshua, Abiah http://winthropsociety.com/settlers/b-data.htm

Thomas Bartlett's origins are unknown. He came to New England as a servant to Mr. Pelham, probably in 1630, as he appeared in court for the theft of tools from his employer May 3, 1631. [1] [3] Thomas settled in Watertown where he was admitted to the church prior to 4 March 1634/5. He was married to Hannah (Unknown) by February 28, 1636/7. Their children, all born in Watertown: [1] [2] [3]

Hannah, born about 1637, died early.
Mehitable, born July 15, 1640, married Henry Spring.
Hannah, born August 6, 1642, married John Kemble.
Bathshua, born April 17, 1647, married John Applin.
Abiah, born May 28, 1651, married Jonathan Sanderson.

According to Anderson, Thomas Bartlett and his wife did little or no land purchasing or sales during their lifetime, as there are no recorded deeds for them in the Middlesex registry. [3]

Thomas died April 26, 1654 in Watertown "aged about 60 years". There is some doubt as to the accuracy of this statement, as it suggests a date of birth of 1594 - a bit old to have been a servant in 1631, and a bit old to be getting married in 1636/7. His will, dated April 22, 1653 and probated June 20, 1654 leaves 7 pounds, 10 shillings to each of his four daughters and the rest of his estate for life to his wife, Hannah. After her death, two-thirds of his wife's share was to be divided among his living children with the remaining third disposed as his wife desired. His wife, Hannah, was to be the executrix. [1] [2] [3]

The inventory of Thomas Bartlett's estate on June 9, 1654 totaled 181 pounds, 16 shillings of which 101 pounds, 10 shillings was real estate. [2] [3]

His widow died at Watertown, July 11, 1676. [1] [2] [3] Sources

Birth: 1605, England Death: Apr. 26, 1654 Watertown Middlesex County Massachusetts, USA

If correct, his age at death would place his birth about 1594, but this would make him thirty-seven when he was a servant of William Pelham, and more than forty years old when he married. A more likely year for his birth would be about 1605 or even 1610. Subsistence farmer who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1630 & settled in Watertown. This is the earliest record for Thomas Bartlett, and suggests strongly that he came in 1630, possibly with WILLIAM PELHAM. If he was Pelham's servant in England, then his origins should be sought in Lincolnshire.

This is the earliest record for Thomas Bartlett, and suggests strongly that he came in 1630, possibly with WILLIAM PELHAM. If he was Pelham's servant in England, then his origins should be sought in Lincolnshire. Since the Beaverbrook Plow lands (28 February 1636/7) and the Remote Meadows (26 June 1637) were both granted largely on the basis of family size, and since Thomas Bartlett received two acres in each allotment, he must have married prior to 28 February 1636/7, and his first daughter Hannah must have been born after 26 June 1637. Thomas Bartlett and his widow were very conservative in their landholding activities. There are no recorded deeds for them in the Middlesex registry; his inventory shows that he held everything that was granted to him, and possibly added six acres of Lieu of Township land (since the Farms were not yet laid out, they did not yet have any value, and were at this early date often omitted from inventories, only to reappear later); and his widow had apparently made only small adjustments, as her inventory shows slightly larger home stall and Lieu of Township lots, but no Beaverbrook P lowland lot. In her twenty years of widowhood, Hannah Bartlett had managed her inheritance very well. Died d: 26 Feb 1653/54 or 26 April 1654. Thomas Bartlett 1594-1654

Thomas Bartlett migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Disputed Origins Anderson in the Great Migration Begins states Thomas's origins are unknown. According to Burke's American Families with British Ancestry, Thomas Bartlett may have been a son of Edmund Barttelot and Elizabeth Gore.[1] Thomas came to a New England as a servant, and the the Bartelots of Ernley were of a higher social class and unlikely candidates for his parent. Therefore these parents been disconnected. Biography Thomas Bartlett was born between 1580 and 1590 in England. He came to New England as a servant to Mr. Pelham, probably in 1630, as he appeared in court for the theft of tools from his employer May 3, 1631.[2][3] Thomas settled in Watertown where he was admitted to the church prior to 4 March 1634/5. He was married to Hannah (Unknown) by February 28, 1636/7. Their children, all born in Watertown:[2][3] [4][5] Hannah, born about 1637, died early. Mehitable, born July 15, 1640, married Henry Spring. Hannah, born August 6, 1642, married John Kemble. Bathshua, born April 17, 1647, married John Applin. Abiah, born May 28, 1651, married Jonathan Sanderson. According to Anderson, Thomas Bartlett and his wife did little or no land purchasing or sales during their lifetime, as there are no recorded deeds for them in the Middlesex registry.[3] Thomas died April 26, 1654 in Watertown "aged about 60 years".[5]There is some doubt as to the accuracy of this statement, as it suggests a date of birth of 1594 - a bit old to have been a servant in 1631, and a bit old to be getting married in 1636/7. His wife, Hannah, was to be the executrix.[2][3] The inventory of Thomas Bartlett's estate on June 9, 1654 totaled 181 pounds, 16 shillings of which 101 pounds, 10 shillings was real estate.[3][4] His widow died at Watertown, July 11, 1676.[2][3][4][5] Both Thomas and Hannah are buried in the Old Burying Place in Watertown. Research Notes According to Bond: "Ensign THOMAS BARTLETT. an original proprietor; freeman. Mar. 4, 1635-6; selectman, 1639, '44, '52, and '54; d. Ap. 26, 1654; aged about 60; and his wid. HANNAH d. July 11, 1676. In his Will, dated 1653, proved Feb. 26, 1654-5, he mentions his wife Hannah and his daughters Mehitabel, Hannah, Bethuah [Beth- shuah, or Bethsheba], and Abial."[6][7] Source: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bartlett-1296

BIRTH: If correct, his age at death would place his birth about 1594, but this would make him thirty-seven when he was a servant of William Pelham, and more than forty years old when he married. A more likely year for his birth would be about 1605 or even 1610. COMMENTS: On 3 May 1631 the General Court ordered that "Thomas Bartlett, servant to Mr. Pelham, shall be whipped for his unjust selling of his master's tools, & that Samuell Hosier & John Page shall return either the tools they bought of him, or the prices thereof, to Mr. Pelham" [MBCR <javascript:APop(p2390,150,180);> 1:86]. This is the earliest record for Thomas Bartlett, and suggests strongly that he came in 1630, possibly with WILLIAM PELHAM </cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=greatmigrationindex&f3=jumptoWILLIAMPELHAM>. If he was Pelham's servant in England, then his origins should be sought in Lincolnshire. Since the Beaverbrook Plowlands (28 February 1636/7) and the Remote Meadows (26 June 1637) were both granted largely on the basis of family size, and since Thomas Bartlett received two acres in each allotment, he must have married prior to 28 February 1636/7, and his first daughter Hannah must have been born after 26 June 1637. Thomas Bartlett and his widow were very conservative in their landholding activities. There are no recorded deeds for them in the Middlesex registry; his inventory shows that he held everything that was granted to him, and possibly added six acres of Lieu of Township land (since the Farms were not yet laid out, they did not yet have any value, and were at this early date often omitted from inventories, only to reappear later); and his widow had apparently made only small adjustments, as her inventory shows slightly larger homestall and Lieu of Township lots, but no Beaverbrook Plowland lot. In her twenty years of widowhood, Hannah Bartlett had managed her inheritance very well.
