About Ens. Thomas Mapes

"Thomas Mapes was here as early as 1657... Thomas Mapes, who seems to have come to Southold later than these Olney men came to Long Island, made his will in 1686. It was proved the next year. Disputed Origins

3 possible origin stories for Thomas Mapes

  • The parents of Thomas Mapes are not conclusively known. Many online genealogies suggest he is the son of Francis Mapes and Anna Loveday; if she is his mother, Thomas is potentially a Magna Carta gateway ancestor. Thomas was a surveyor; there is evidence Francis was also. Aside from that connection, there is no proof (yet).
  • It's also possible Thomas was the son of Francis' brothers John or Richard.
  • Some suggest that the name Mapes is actually the German Mepps. Are there records of other German immigrants on Long Island at this time?
