Captain Ephraim Ephraim Middaugh, Sr.

Gill's biography of Charles Wesley MIDDAUGH states Ephraim was 84 years old when he died in 1847 which would make his year of birth about 1763.

The records of the Dutch Reformed Church at Conewago, PA indicate Ephraim joined the Dutch families from Sussex and Somerset Counties who emigrated to Conewago. The settlement was more or less abandoned by the Dutch by 1785-95. Some emigrated to Kentucky, others to the Finger Lake area of New York and others just scattered mainly to the West. Attempting to trace the movements of individuals or families thru census data is both difficult and the results suspect. In Ephraim's case some letters and bible records seem to indicate he left Conewago and went first to the Somerset County area of Pennsylvania and from there to Sugar Creek Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The census records appear to support this emigration by Ephraim.

His descendants and lineage are based on the above, a historical sketch written by William C. Baker on 2/14/1915 with bible records and family group sheets attached (see LDS microfilm #1705343) and a biography of one of his grandsons, Charles Wesley Middaugh, written by E. A. Gill.

The family group sheets attached to the W.C. Baker memorandum indicate Lydia's surname was HUNTER not HATTRAY.
