He was no doubt named after the beloved pastor of Old Swedes Church, Ericus Tobias Bjork who married his aunt, Christina Stalcop. Ericus married Brita Anderson (spelled Brigitto when married) 22 Nov 1753. She was probably born 17 Nov 1733 dau of Peter Anderson & Kerstin (Old Swedes Church). When their children were born, her name was spelled Brita & Brigito.
On 23 Nov 1756 Erick Smith of Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co. Yeoman & Bridget his wife sell to Thomas Shipley for three hundred & six pounds 136 acres which was willed to him by his father Hanse Smith bearing date 12 Dec 1753. His father purchased the land from Charles Springer on 4th Nov 1732 recorded in Lib G pg 657 U. The land was described as being by a corner of Samuel Milner's land & by Andrew Stalcop's tract. In the deed it states the original owners of the land. The will referred to in the deed has not been found on record in New Castle Co. The deed was recorded 5 Dec 1788. (Pg 316-18 Deed Bk G Vol 2-New Castle Co.)
Ericus moved to Augusta Co., VA and the earliest record of him there was on 18 Jun 1770 when he was a witness when Charles Hays, Sr. deeded land to harles Hays, Jr. (Pg 529 Chalkley's Chronicles of Scotch Irish Settlement-Augusta Co., VA) He was also a witness as Eracker Smith to John Stephenson's estate on 14 Aug 1770. (pg 116 Chalkely's Chricles of Scotch Irish Settlement Vol 3).
Ericus served in Lord Dunmore's War and was at Elk Garden Fort in 1774 where he was reported as "Found bread till 29 Aug" in Capt. Daniel Smith's Co 13 Aug 1774. (Pg 81 Lord Dunmore's War Virginia Colonial Militia) Elk Garden Creek where the fort was located during the Lord Dunmore's War, is now in Russell Co.
He was one of the appraisers of the estate of Richard Lenam on 9 May 1778 in Washington Co, VA. (Pg 990 Annals of Southwest Virginia by Lewis Preston Summers)
Ericus appeared on John Kinkead's Tax List in Washington Co.
Ericus had a survey made on 4 Oct 1783 for 200 A on Waters of Thompson Creek a Branch of Clinch River in New Garden, Washington Co, VA.
On 9 Dec 1785 he was among the signers of a petition for division of Washington Co, VA. Ericus Jr. and Eli Smith, his sons, were also signers.
His name appears on Major Dysart's Tax List of 1786 in Washington Co, VA.
On 17 Sep 1787 Ericus was a patentee for 82 A on waters of Thompson Creek, a branch of Clinch River adj. Samuel Priest's land. (Bk 14 pg 12 Commonwealth Grants & Patents for Washington Co, VA. (Land was later located in Russell Co., VA).
On 2 Oct 1787 he had a patent for 200 A on the waters of Thompson Creek branch of Clinch River (Bk 16 pg 166 Commonwealth Grants for Washington Co., VA)
In 1792 property tax was paid by Andrew Smith assignee of Ericus Smith-200 A & in the 1793 property taxes were paid by Eli Smith assignee of Ericus Smith-60 Acres.
He probably died in 1792 as his wife, Bridget appears as head of house with one tithable (one son) on 15 Mar 1793 in Russell Co., VA. She probably died about 1797 when children sold property.
Three indentures appear in Russell Co, VA Deed books. One was dated 21 August 1797 between Ericus Smith and Rosanna his wife, Andrew Smith & Rachel his wife, Ephraim Hatfield and Mary his wife, Joseph Hatfield and Rachel his wife of Russell Co, VA selling land to Ely Smith for 100 pounds land containing 94 acres being part of a tract of land lying and being in New Garden. This land was Ericus Smith, Sr. property according to the above deed transactions.
Ericus & Bridget had 6 Children. The first three were born in New Castle Co with two of the births apearing in Old Swedes Church records and the other three were probably born in Augusta Co, VA: (A lot of the information about Ericus Smith & family was received from Mrs. Lowell Smith, Jr., Rio Vista, TX):
    1. Maria Smidt b 25 Nov 1754. Bapt 8 Dec 1754. )Pg 574 Old Swedes Church) (From the land trasactions it appeared she was the Mary md. to Ephraim Hatfield but some family members believed Ephraim Hatfield to be the son of Joseph Hatfield and his first wife, Elizabeth Vance.)
    2. John Smidt b. 20 Oct 1757 & bapt. 21 Oct 1757. Died Nov 1757 when 4 weeks old (pg 914) Old Swedes Church 3rd Bk., New Castle Co Del)

[NOTE ON THE TUTTLE MANUSCRIPT: Dorothy Tuttle is a dedicated historian and genealogist of this Smith family who has made a major effort to trace the line of the Tobias Smith family of Washington Co, VA. She has kindly included some information on brothers to her Tobias...her records on Ericus Smith reproduced here...in her manuscript. She had collected information from her own impeccable research and through correspondence with other researchers. Should any conflicts in data arise Dorothy can possibly supply the name and address of the researcher who sent her whatever is included. Do note that her own research extended only to Ericus Smith & wife Bridget Anderson--all info on their children came from others...some of which is flawed & should be checked carefully.]

_____________________________________________________________

Ericus Smith & family are missing from records between a Delaware record of Nov 1757 when son John was buried in Old Swedes Church in Wilmington and Apr of 1770 when Ericus begins making continuous records in Southwestern Virginia. These are the years in which most of his children were born. He should have been in Virginia at least part of this time, for a Virginia birth is given for his son Ali on the 1880 census of Ali's only surviving child. A very major issue to be resolved is his location for these black hole years. His brothers Frederick & Tobias were in Virginia and regularly kick up in records, but Ericus is notable by his absence. Have checked Orange Co, NC (where his wife's father and siblings had migrated); Rowan Co, NC; Orange Co, VA; Frederick Co, VA, Berkeley Co, VA; Lunenberg, VA; Isle of Wight, VA. Need to examine Bedford and Greenbrier Cos., VA, then PA & MD as a backup.

NAMING NOTE: George Hanson, Swedish genealogy expert, says that the Swedish pronunciation of "Ericus" & "Eli" is with a rolling, long /a/ sound. That could explain why their names appear with both spellings, as do court records written by various court clerks. Pronunciation: "Air-eek'-us" (note the accent is on the middle syllable).

TIE TO DELAWARE: ANNALS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA; Summers, Lewis Preston; p.900

19 May 1778 Washington Co, VA
Named appraiser of estate of Richard Linam, along with Patrick Denny, William Ferral, & James Anderson
[Andrew Lynam later got a Rev. War pension in which he states that he was born in Granville Co, NC, in 1759, but moved at a young age to VA. His father died shortly thereafter. Enlisted from Washington Co, VA. In the unselected papers of this pension are depositions of Samuel & _______ Anderson. His son Richard Lynam also deposed. All this suggests that Andrew Lynam was son of Richard Lynam, who was likely the son of Andrew Lynam who was early in Southwestern Virginia (see Woods Hole Entry Book) & a son to Anders Lynam/Loinan of Wilmington. Did check early records of Orange & Rowan Cos, NC, for Ericus Smith, but no soap. If they were there, it was lightly.]
[James Anderson is an interesting figure--his apparent son (another) James Anderson filed a Rev. War pension showing enlistment in Washington Co, VA, & states that he was from Bedford Co, VA. Just how related are these to Bridget Anderson Smith? Better check Bedford Co, VA, for Ericus Smith in missing years.]
[Patrick Denny--my own ancestor through his daughter Jane who md. Ali Smith, son of Ericus & Bridget, in Washington Co, VA, 8 Mar 1783. There is a Denny family in Wilmington, but have no clue if Patrick is related to them.]

1781--appeared in Wash. Co, VA, court Aug 1781 to prove his settlement on his land on Thompson's Creek--see land survey below.

ESTIMATE OF DEATH: RUSSELL CO. VA RECORDS; Albert, Anne Roberts; privately published; 1973; p.113 for 1793 list when Bridget Smith is head of house for first & only time; DalPubLib 929.3 V8RVa

 Estimate of Ericus' death:
Ericus last appears on Russell Co, VA, tax lists as of March 15, 1792; Bridget Smith appears as head of house with one tithable on Mar 15, 1793, so Ericus died in this 12-month period.
 Estimate of Bridget's death:
Appears on personal property tax list, Upper District of Russell Co, Va, 1793. as "Bridget Smith, 1 tithable"(one male over 16). Not seen again. The land of Ericus & Bridget is sold by heirs in 1797 without her, so deceased by that time. Her sons appear without her in 1794+, paying taxes as "Ali Smith, assignee of Andrew Smith" and the like. It is not unreasonable to think that she died prior to the 1794 list since no further mention is made.
Just who might be this unnamed tithable? What if she had another son whom we have lost? Also seen on the 1793 list are households of known sons: Andrew, Eli, Ericus Jr., & 10 other Smiths--so this is not one of them.
A "Briton Smith, 1 tithable" appears on the 1796 Personal Prop. Tax List for 1796 along with Andrew, Eli, Ericus, 2 Georges & a Hardin, but later records show this to be a man & not a reappearance of Bridget. He survived later & therefore is not related to this family.

NOTE: No probate was filed on Ericus Smith in Russell County or surrounding counties. Yes, the first will & estate book of Russell County, VA, is missing, but the court minutes of that era do survive. Have read them page by page; no will or intestacy was filed at all, although wills & administrations were granted for a number of other deceased men.
