ACCIDENT NO. 8— February 5th, A. D. 1906, Red Jacket shaft, August Carlson. — A premature blast at the 66th level Red Jacket shaft, resulting in the death of August Carlson. Inquest was held before Coroner Fisher.

John Beck, a witness, testified as follows: "I know August Carlson. He was my partner; we were working this morning at the 66th level, north side of No. 4 shaft, Calumet and Hecla Mine. As soon as we got down this morning we went inside to see if there was any blockholes to be blasted. We do this when we go down either in the morning or in the evening. We found a big rock and decided we would have to blast it. We gave this rock four sticks of powder. We lit the fuse with the snoff in the regular way, and it went off all right. After it went off we went in again to see how the rock broke. The rock was broken but not small enough to go through the mill and we decided to blast again. I gave the rock two and one-half sticks of powder this time. There was an other large rock near it and my partner, (Carlson), gave that four sticks. We blasted them both at the same time. We lit the fuse and then went out. We heard two reports and then walked slowly inside to see what kind of a job we had done. The rocks were broken but did not go down through the mill. Both rocks broke. I said I would go down in under and bar this rock and give it a start. My partner, (Carlson), was standing on the top of the covering right on the end. I took a bar and went down and tried to start the rock that had stuck in the mill, and just as the rock started another report went off. It knocked my hat off and I was in the dark. The rock I started just simply settled down a little. I do not know what caused this report or how the powder went off. I was under the covering and that saved me. We were about sixteen feet up from the level. I don't know how the powder was there. When I got down to the level I did not know what had become of my partner, until I heard him call. I went up right away and got hold of him. He was sitting in the mill. Not the one where I barred down the rock, but the next one south. He seemed to be hurt most in the leg. He was living when we got to surface but did not speak. He died on the way to the Hospital. The accident happened about half-past seven. He lost a great deal of blood. It took quite a while to get him out. There were some cars there with rock that had to be taken out before we could bring out the truck with him. I took a piece of fuse and tied around his leg to try to stop the flow of blood. We leave our hand-box with powder down in the level, and take up what we think we need in our hands. There were six or seven sticks left in the hand-box after we got through blasting. I do not know whether he had the hand-box up with him in the stope or whether it is in the level."

John Musich testified as follows: "I work at the Red Jacket shaft. I know August Carlson. Saw him this morning at the 66th level north of No. 4. I am a trammer. This morning after they came down Beck and Carlson took the powder-box and went inside and charged the rocks. We do not go in until after they blast. The miners go in first. I heard three reports. I do not know how the accident happened. I do not know how the powder got there."

Verdict of the Jury: "That the said August Carlson came to his death on the fifth day of February, A. D. 1906. Cause of death due to accident caused by a premature blast at the 66th level, Red Jacket shaft, north of No. 4 shaft, Calumet and Hecla Mine."

1906 Feb 6 Tuesday DIED-August CARLSON, a miner working underground in the Red Jacket shaft of the mine was killed yesterday morning by a piece of falling rock due to a premature explosion. He was hurried to the Calumet and Hecla hospital and died there at once. He lived in Yellow Jacket and is survived by a wife and three children. The funeral will be tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. Two of his brother's Peter (Carl Petter) and Joseph (Josef Anders) CARLSON of Chicago will attend the funeral

Onnettomuus nro 8 — 5. helmikuuta 1906, Red Jacket shaft, August Carlson.
Ennenaikainen räjähdys Red Jacket -kuilun tasolla 66 vuoksi August Carlson sai surmansa.

Tapaturmatutkintaa johti kuolinsyyntutkija ("Coroner") Fisher.

John Beck, todisti seuraavasti: "Tunnen August Carlssonin. Hän oli minun työparini; olimme tänä aamuna työssä Calumet and Hecla -kaivoksessa tasolla 66, pohjoiseen kuilusta nro 4. Kun pääsimme alas tänä aamuna menimme heti katsomaan olisiko siellä räjäyttämällä pilkottavia lohkareita ("blockholes"). Me teemme sen, kun menemme alas joko aamulla tai illalla. Löysimme ison lohkareen ja päätimme että se täytyy räjäyttää. Laitoimme siihen neljä pötköä räjähdettä. Sytytimme tulilangan tavanomaiseen tapaan ja se räjähti niin kuin piti. Menimme katsomaan kuinka kivi halkesi. Lohkare oli murtunut, muttei riittävän pieniksi palasiksi mahtuakseen suppiloon, ja siksi päätimme räjäyttää sen uudelleen. Laitoimme siihen sillä kertaa kaksi ja puoi pötköä. Sen lähellä oli toinenkin iso lohkare ja työparini (Carlson) laittoi siihen neljä pötköä. Räjäytimme ne molemmat yhtä aikaa. Sytytimme tulilangan ja panos räjähti. Kuulimme kaksi pamausta ja kävelimme hitaasti sisään katsomaan mitä se oli saanut aikaan. Kivet olivat hajonneet, mutteivät vieläkään mahtuneet suppiloon.("mill"). Molemmet kivet olivat haljenneet. Sanoin meneväni alaosaan kangen kanssa ja yrittänäni saada sen irtoamaan. Työparini (Carlson) seisoi yläpuolella. Otin kangen ja menin alas yrittäen irrottaa kiveä joka oli juuttunut suppiloon, ja juuri kun kivi liikahti, tapahtui uusi räjähdys. Se lennätti päähineeni pois ja olin pimeässä. Kivi jota olin saanut liikutettua vain asettui takaisin paikoilleen. En tiedä mikä aiheutti tuon räjähdyksen enkä kuinka ruuti oli syttynyt. Olin reunuksen takana ja se pelasti minut. Me olimme noin 16 jalkaa tason yläpuolella. En tiedä miten siellä oli räjähde. Kun pääsin alas tasolle en tiennyt mitä oli tapahtunut työparilleni ennen kuin kuulin hänen äänensä. Menin heti hänen luokseen. Hän istui suppilossa. Ei siinä jossa olin ollut kampeamassa kiveä, vaan toisessa etelän puolella. Hänen jalkansa näytti saaneet pahimmat vammat. Hän oli elossa kun pääsimme maanpinnalle, muttei puhunut. Hän kuoli matkalla sairaalaan. Onnettomuus tapahtui noin puoli kahdeksalta. Hän menetti paljon verta. Kesti melko kauan saada hänet ulos. Vaunut oli täynnä kiviä, jotka meidän täytyi tyhjentää ennen kuin saimme tuotua hänet ulos. Otin pätkän tulilankaa ja kiedoin sen hänen jalkansa ympärille yrittäen tyrehdyttää verenvuodon. Me jätämme räjähteiden käsivaraston tasolle ja otamme mukaamme käsissämme vain sen mitä tarvitaan panostukseen. Käsivarastossa oli jäljellä noin kuusi tai seitsemän pötköä. En osaa sanoa oliko hänellä käsivarasto mukanaan rintauksella vai oliko se tasolla."

John Musich todisti seuraavasti: "Työskentelen Red Jacket -kuilussa. Tunnen August Carlsonin. Näin hänet tänä aamuna tasolla 66, pohjoiseen kuilusta nro 4. Olen vaunumies ("trammer"). Kun Beck ja Carlson olivat tulleet alas tänä aamuna he ottivat ruutilaatikon ja menivät sisään rintaukselle ja panostivat lohkareet. Me emme mene sisään ennen kuin räjäytykset on suoritettu. Kaivosmiehet menevät sisään ensin. Kuulin kolme pamausta. En tiedä miten onnettomuus tapahtui. En tiedä miten ruuti joutui sinne."

Valamiehistön päätös: "August Carlson sai surmana 5. helmikuuta 1906. Kuolema sattui onnettomuudessa, jonka aiheutti ennenaikainen räjähdys Calumet and Hecla -kaivoksen Red Jacket -kuilun tasolla 66, pohjoiseen kuilusta nro 4 shaft."

Kuolleita - August CARLSON, kaivosmies työssään maan alla kaivoksen Red Jacket -kuilussa sai surmansa eilen aamulla ennenaikaisen räjähdyksen pudottaessa kivenlohkareen. Häne vietiin kiireesti Calumet & Hecla -sairaalaan jossa hän heti kuoli. Hänen kotinsa oli Yellow Jacket ja häneltä jäi vaimo ja kolme lasta. Siunaustilaisuus pidetään huomenna. Hautaus tapahtuu Lake View -hautausmaalle Calumetiin. Hänen kaksi veljeään, Peter (Karl Petter) ja Joseph Josef Anders) CARLSON tulevat hautajaisiin Chicagosta.
