About Erik Nielsen Knippel
He owned a paint shop and was among the founders of Faaborg technical school, where he was school forstander. He was very interested in the music and was President of The Music Association. He painted preferably flowers images. It is this Erik Nielsen Knippel, who is depicted on Carl Knippels painting "MY PARENTS”, which hangs at the Faaborg Museum.
Erich Knippel worked as a painter's apprentice in Copenhagen, while he attended the Academy. Here he had contact with the painter Carl Dahl, who was also from Faaborg. An influence of Ecker's school is evident in Knippel’s sketches of the various types of ships seen in varied positions in the lake. From his father, master painter Wilhelm August Knippel, Knippel. had inherited a tradition of painting ship portraits, and it is within this genre that Knippel showed a freedom and an artistic nerve that goes beyond their craft skills. The surviving pictures and sketches of houses and street parties in Faaborg show that Knippel similarly sought to build a client base of property portraits. Knippel was master of the painter Roy Birkholm and his son Carl Knippel, who was also a painter. Erich and Marie Knippel’s home was one of the assembly points for the young Funen painters.
