Erkki Kivinen was the owner of the Koirakivi Estate in the village of Sappee in Kuhmoinen, Finland. He was a forestry expert and managed the forests of his estate with skill and careful planning. He farmed the land and provided for his family all food and materials for clothing and other textiles. Linen was grown and processed at home, spun and used in weaving household textiles, bedlinens, towels, curtains, rugs and clothing. The lakes surrounding Koirakivi were sources for many species of fish. Pigs, sheep, chickens,cows and horses were raised on the farm. As children my brother and I spent summer vacations on the farm and enjoyed the harvest time activities, fishing and catching crawfish from the nearby lake, milking the cows and feeding the farm animals. Swimming in the lakes and going to sauna at the lakeside were frequent activities.
