Ernest Reginald Torr (1911 - 1999)

Brief overview:

Ernest (87), was born in the Molteno district in 1911. He was attacked on his farm in Kendrew, Graaff Reinet on 25th August 1999, and passed away two days later on 27th August.

Torr's body was found by police on 27 August in an office on the back stoep of his house, after they had been alerted by a neighbour.

His hands and feet were bound and there were signs of assault. The cause of death was said to be exposure, since the suspects did not kill the man, but left him tied up, with small chance for survival.

  • The two accused left the farm in Torr's car, which was abandoned and found by police on a dirt road in Aberdeen the next day. It was not until the body was found that the car was linked to the murder.

  • Dampie Jacobs was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Torr on his Kendrew farm, about 30km outside Graaff-Reinet.
  • Co-accused Jannie Barends was sentenced to 20 years for murder and 15 years for robbery. The sentences will run concurrently.
