Ernle David Lewis Chatfield, 2nd Baron Chatfield was born on 2 January 1917 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of Admiral Alfred Ernle Montacute Chatfield, 1st Baron Chatfield and Lillian Emma Matthews. He married Felicia Mary Elizabeth Bulman, daughter of Dr. John Roderick Bulman, on 16 May 1969. He died on 30 September 2007 at age 90 at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
He was educated between 1926 and 1930 at King's Mead, Seaford, Sussex, England. He was educated between 1930 and 1934 at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Devon, England. He was educated between 1934 and 1936 at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General of Canada between 1940 and 1945. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Chatfield, of Ditchling, co. Sussex [United Kingdom, 1937] on 15 November 1967. He gained the rank of Honorary Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He lived in 2003 at 535 Island Road, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
