About Esther Virginia Clarke
Esther Virginia Bullock was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on May 27, 1850 almost four years after the birth of her future husband George W. Clark in Sept.1846. George W. Clark joined Braxton's Battery of the Fredericksburg Artillery (CSA) at the age of 17 in 1846. He wrote in his memoir that the Yankee Army was drafting boys of his age so he preferred to join his two brothers who were soldiers in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under the command of Gen. Robert E. Lee. He fought at the Second Wilderness Battle, the Bloody Angle, and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. GW and Esther were married on Feb. 2,1869. They had eight children: Mortimer, Amanda, Alice, Nellie, Verna, Lucy, Willie, and Bessie. Esther died in December of 1936. According to her Pastor, a Professor at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg and many witnesses in her county, Esther was blessed in the 1920s by a faith miracle in that she was suddently able to walk one day after many years of not being able to walk. She was reading Matthew Chapter 17 when she was inspired to get up and walk and did so until the day of her death in 1936.
