About Ethel Perkins
One of 13 children - only 5 lived to be adults, Willie came home from WW1, maybe kicked by mule, but it is understood he was also gassed, he married but passed away a year later. Emma died in childbirth, but Annie, Ada & my Ethel lived to be elderly. Ethel talked about having a "set" pot which was set in permanent place and a fire was lit under it the night before the laundry was done. She said her mother would put a potful of dried peas on top of this and it would cook away all day. Ethel always called dried peas "washday peas". All the children had chores to do but apparently they were rotated but Ethel could always get out of doing them if she sewed for them instead.
Ethel met Arthur at a dance and when they decided to marry they thought times were good in Canada and they should emigrate. Arthur came first in 1911 hoping to make enough money to send for her (this was a 10 or 11 day boat trip). Ethel came in March and they were married 3 days later, (Mar 21, 1912). Arthur had arranged for a carriage and two white horses but they had such a bad snow storm, they sent out a poor carriage & one black horse.
Ceil Stanley was born in 1913 & one year later they returned to England. When WW1 broke out they were not allowed to return to Canada and Arthur was not allowed to enlist in the army, he was needed in the foundry to make munitions. Dorothy was born in 1915. As the war ended my Ethel's father, William Mountain, caught the flu which was an epidemic at that time and died. In January, 1919, Arthur & Ethel returned to Canada and Vera was born in 1919.
Ethel was a well known seamstress, Past Worthy Matron and life member of Rosedale Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
Born at 9 Beeston Court, Holbeck, Leeds.
Came to Canada in 1912 and married Arthur. Cecil was born in Canada. Returned to England where Dorothy was born and after WW1 returned to Canada where Vera was born.
Died at the Henderson General Hospital, Hamilton. Buried in Burkholder Cemetery, Lot 10, Row 5, Sec. C.
Past Worthy Matron and life member of Rosedale Chapter O.E.S. (Eastern Star).
