About Ethel Daisy TATE

GEDCOM Note

!BIOGRAPHY: Ethel Daisy Tate (known as Daisy, or affectionately as Jumbo in earlier years) was the 4th child for Alfred and Mary Tate and was born at 10pm on the 29th April 1879 at 57 Haymarket SW London. Daisy was baptized at the Carlton Baptist Church in 1897 after emigrating to Australia with the family and taking up residence in High St., Carlton (SW Sydney) Daisy was interested in horses in early life, and over time had many pets, particularly dogs and cats. She did not marry and remained with her parents - moving to the Guest House "Fernside" in Katoomba and helping her parents run that until they moved to brother Sid's house in Westmead when he went to World War 1. As well as looking after her parents as they aged, Daisy also had the responsibility of her nephews, David and Ernie (Sid's sons). The house at Pye Street was not large, but the boys were well brought up, even though in straitened circumstances, and also under the attention of their mother's family, the Davies. Daisy did not always take this in good grace. When the boys left school to work in the bank, they contributed financially (and often took her on picnics) and even after the death of Mary, then Alfred, and the boys had left home, Daisy was looked after (as she sometimes expected she should). Daisy featured in many of the family photos, particularly with her many nieces and nephews. She remained at Pye St. and as time went by played host to her grand-nephews - Peter, Christopher and sometimes Neil - for stopovers of several days. David Tate was still acting as carer (financially and, when necessary, emotionally) through the War, after his marriage, and after her final illness, she spent her last days at his house in Five Dock, where she died in December 1951, at the age of 72. She was buried at Rookwood with her parents, Jack and near Sid's wife Nell.
