About Evander McNair Robeson
Evander was the fifth son of Samuel and Elizabeth Robeson. He enlisted in Co. K, NC 18th Infantry Regiment on 26 April 1861, along with many other Bladen Co. men. On 17 Sept 1862 he was promoted to 1st Sergeant and soon afterwards to 1st Lieutenant on 17 Oct. 1862. He was later promoted to Captain and mustered out on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
Evander's mother kept a diary (The Diary of Elizabeth Ellis Robeson 1847-1866), which, though sketchy, is a very valuable record of the events in the Tar Heel area at that time.
On Feb 22, 1865, while on furlong, Evander married Sarah Elmira Dunham (1843-1930), a daughter of James Snowden & Ann"Annie" Elizabeth Singletary Dunham. She is buried in same cemetery (see FAG #10743598a. Note she was actually born in 1843). In the diary she is referred to as Elmira.
Evander and Elmira had seven children: (1.) Samuel (1869- ) m. Ella Melvin (2.) Mary (1871- ) m. E. L. Singletary (3.) Alexis (1874-1958) m. Mamie M. Willis (4.) James ("Mr. Jim") E. (1877-1970 ) d.um. (5.) Annie Laura (1879- ) (6.) William R. (1882-1973) m. Mamie B. Burney (7.) Robert R. (1887-1977) m. Rebecca M. Jones
