About Eve de Tracy

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tracy-267

Eve de Tracy was the only daughter of Henry de Tracy, Knt., and Maud de Brewes (or Breuse, Braose).[1][2] Her father held several manors in Devon, where she may have been born. Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated.

Eve married, as his first wife, Guy de Bryan of Laugharne, Carmarthenshire,[1] and Tobrian, Devon, etc.[2] Guy de Bryan was appointed Governor of Carmarthen and Cardigan Castles in 1264.[1][2] They had one daughter:

Maud, born 25 December 1242, who married (1) Nicholas Fitz Martin before 1257, (2) Geoffrey de Camville, Knt., about 1268[1][2][3]

Eve died before 21 August 1274,[1][2] the date of her father's Inquisition Post Mortem, in which Eve's daughter Maud, wife of Geoffrey de Camville, was named his heir.[4]

Her husband remarried and had another child. Guy de Bryan died in 1307.[1][2]

Research Notes

Disputed Son

Lewis's database included a son, Philippe de Bryan.[5]

concerns

Do not confuse this Eve with Eva Fitz Warine.

From Stirnet's "Tracy1" page (link below): "Not sure which wife was mother of ... <this Eve>" (meaning that NN de Torginton (de Torrington?) might be the correct mother of this Eve)

The tradition that she last married Llewelyn Fawr (Llewelyn the Great) is not impossible, and her father Fulk FitzWarin was closely connected to Llewelyn, but the story is speculative, and comes from the romances rather than from historical records. If indeed they married, there was no issue. (December 18, 2015; Anne Brannen, curator)

Origins

Maud de Brewes married before May 1220 (date of lawsuit) Henry de Tracy, Knt., Baron of the Exchequer, Constable of Exeter Castle, Governor of Lundy Island, son and heir of Oliver de Tracy of Barnstaple, Devon, and Eve Fitz Warin.[1] They had four sons and one daughter:

  1. Henry, living in 1263, predeceased his father and left no surviving issue[1]
  2. Thomas, Knt., married Iseult de Cardinham before 1256 and had no issue; he was living in 1263, when his father gave him lands in Cornwall, but had died by 1268[1]
  3. John, clerk, died about 1254[1][2]
  4. [Master] Oliver, clerk, appointed in 1265 with his father as Wardens of the Devon sea shore[1][2]
  5. Eve, predeceased her father, wife of Guy de Bryan and mother of Maud[1]
