Evelene 'Eve' Veronica de Lange (1939 - 2002)
Brief overview:
Evelene (63), and her husband Johannes John de Lange (also referred to as Johnny) (66), were attacked and tortured on their smallholding on Old Seaview Road, near Mount Pleasant, Port Elizabeth, on 24th January 2002.
Evelene's hands and feet were tied up, she was raped, garroted, then drowned by forcing her mouth open beneath a running water tap.
Johnny was ambushed upon his return from shopping. The perpetrators first shot him with his own shotgun and then bludgeoning him to death with a shovel.
A worker from a neighbouring smallholding testified having seen their gardener beat him to death after he had rushed there in response to hearing the shots.

- Mabuti Dale (21), was sentenced, in the Port Elizabeth High Court, to life imprisonment plus an extra 35 years jail - for the double murder. Also for robbery and illegal firearm and ammunition possession. He plead not guilty to rape, and was found not guilty of raping Mrs de Lange by High Court judge Andre Erasmus due to inconclusive forensic evidence.
