Evelyn R. Zaitlin Obituary

SACO - Evelyn R. Wolfe Zaitlin, of Saco, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013, surrounded by her loving family who came to be with her from far and near. Evelyn was born in Gardiner on Oct. 7, 1925, the daughter of Susie (Levine) and Bernard Wolfe. Evelyn graduated from Portland High School in 1943. In 1941, Evelyn met her sweetheart Harry Zaitlin of Saco, at a dance at the Portland Jewish Community Center. Harry and Evelyn were married in 1944 in New York City, while Harry was on leave from serving in the U.S. Armed Forces in World War II. Evelyn and Harry settled in Saco and raised three children: Sandra, David and Michael. After their children were grown, Evelyn and Harry moved to Boca Raton, Fla., where they enjoyed spending time with visiting friends and relatives. Evelyn was a gracious and welcoming hostess. She had impeccable taste and the Zaitlin home was always a warm and beautiful place. Harry passed away on Nov. 21, 2004, and Evelyn returned to Saco a few years later. Evelyn had many friends and maintained her friendships over both time and distance. Until very recently, she would travel to Portland for a weekly card game with longtime friends at the Atrium at Cedars. She was considered a skilled shopper, she dressed to the nines, and she was always an elegant and graceful presence. Evelyn was predeceased by her brother Morton Wolfe, sister Rosalyn S. Chait; daughter Sandra Rae Sime; brothers-in-law, Irving Zaitlin and Richard Stephenson and sisters-in-law, Ruth Zaitlin and Dorothy Cooper. Evelyn is survived by her sister Marilyn Stephenson of Boca Raton; sons, David and Michael Zaitlin and daughters-in-law, Dee Dee and Diane Zaitlin, all of Saco, son-in-law Larry Sime of Littleton, Mass.; grandchildren, Emily and Ben Brenneman of Austin, Texas, Adam Hersh and Dawn Le of Washington, D.C., Hannah Zaitlin and Jason Pokrant of New Boston, N.H., and Zachary Zaitlin of Portland; and great-grandchildren, Daphne Rae Brenneman and Woodrow Carter Brenneman of Austin. Evelyn is also survived by sisters-in-law, Shirley Wolfe and Elizabeth Levinsky and brothers-in-law, Ben Cooper and Philip Levinsky; along with many nieces and nephews who will always remember their aunt as beautiful, welcoming and kind. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 19, at 3 p.m., at Temple Beth El Memorial Park in Portland. Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.
