About Faibus Savetman

Aug 2017:
Faibus's 1868 death record, written in Russian, is located in the Lomza branch of the Bialystok Archive in Poland. A copy of it had been microfilmed by the LDS (Mormon Church). I ordered the microfilm from Utah and obtained the image from their the Family History Center in New York City. I got it translated, and a copy annotated by me is posted here. It's a great source of information.

It indicates that FAIBUS SAVETMAN died in the town of Czyzew (Chizhevo/ Chizheva) on January 15 1868. The record was made the following day. His age was 47, so he was born around 1820. He was the son of ITSKO and CHAIA MOSKOVNA (=daughter of Mosko). He left his wife SHEYNA REIZA ARONOVNA (=daughter of Aron) and his son ITSKO DAVID, both of whom were residents of Czyzew. There's no mention of any other children. Czyzew at that time was in the Ostrow District of Lomza Province. It's 50 miles southwest of Bialystok and 67 miles northeast of Warsaw.

The Polish spelling of his name was Fejbus and that's how the record got transcribed in the index. He was referred to as FAIVEL and FAJBA elsewhere, his Yiddish name. On his son Itsko Dawid Sawetman's 1865 marriage record in Polish, it's FAYBUS.

Sept 2022:
Twins Elka and Sora SOKOLOWSKA were born on September 19 1843 in Czyzewo and their births were registered in Polish on September 26. Their parents were Orthodox Jew FAYBUS SOKOLOWSKI, age 24, and his wife Szeyna Rosa, 25. There was one registration for both births, which indicated that Elka was the first-born. I was able to download an image of the registration directly from the website of the Polish State Archives. It is Akt 9, 1843 Births, Czyzew-Osada, located in Fond 175 of the Bialystok Archive, Lomza Branch.

(Chaja) ELKA SOKOLOWSKA vel (also known as) SAWETMAN and Josek Boruch RYBAK were married in Czyzewo on May 30 1862. The bride was 19, born in Czyzewo, and the daughter of FAJBUS ICKOWICZ and SZEJNA ROIZA ARONOWNA, nee PERMUTER., couple's married name "SOKOLOWSKI also known as SAWETMAN." There were banns (announcements) posted in the local synagogue for 3 successive Sabbaths before the wedding, and the ceremony was performed by Lejb Permuter, the assistant to the rabbi of the town. An image of the marriage registration is posted here, with translation from the original Polish annotated by me. The record is Akt 18, 1862 Marriages, Czyzew-Osada, located in Fond 175, Bialystok Archive, Lomza Branch.

Another daughter CHAJA FAJBOWNA SAWETMAN died at age 12 in Czyzewo on the evening of May 12 1862 , and her death was registered the next morning. She was born in Czyżewo and was the daughter of Fajba (Fajbus) Ickowicz and Szejna Rejza Aronowna, nee Permuter, legitimate married couple SAWETMAN. He was a laborer. The image of the death registration was provided to me by Gary Palgon, town leader of the Czyzew records extraction project of JRI-Poland, and is posted here. It is Akt 25, Czyzew-Osada Deaths. Fond 175, Lomza Branch of the Bialystok Archive.

July 2023:
His daughter SURA (SORA) ZLATA SAWETMAN (=Sora "Sokolowska" born in 1843) was married to ZYSKIND LEJB SAJETA on June 13 1866 in Czyzewo. The religious marriage took place at 10 am and was registered the same day. It was performed by Lejzor Pay, the assistant rabbi of Czyzew. The groom Zyskind Lejb was a bachelor age 19 and the son of Perec Jankielowicz [=son of Jankiel] and Touba Zyskowna [=daughter of Zysko], “legitimate Sajeta spouses,” occupations bakers. He was living with his parents in Zambrow. The bride Sura Zlata was a maiden age 17, the daughter of FAJBA and SZEJNA REIZA AROWOWNA [=daughter of Aron], “legitimate SAWETMAN spouses,” laborers. She was living with her parents in Czyzew, where she was born. The marriage was preceded by 3 banns (announcements) posted a week apart in the synagogues in both Zambrow and Czyzew.
