Nipote ex fratre, piuttosto che figlio (come sostengono alcuni) di Manfredi (II) Lancia marchese di Busca, figlio di una Beatrice signora di Paternò e fratello minore di Galvano: doveva essere nato prima del 1230 poiché era certo adulto nel 1251, allorché raggiunse la corte di Manfredi di Svevia insieme con il fratello..
