DEATH NOTICE

At Cherry Valley, on the 23d ultimo, after a long and painful illness, which he bore with exemplary fortitude and Christian resignation to the Divine Will, Mr. Finlay Docherty, in the 69th year of his age, leaving a large family, and a numerous circle of relatives to lament the loss of an affectionate parent, and a good member of Society.

The Will of Finlay Docherty (-1854, Lot 50)

In the Name of God Amen

The fourteenth day of February, one thousand Eight hundred and fifty four. I Finlay Docherty of Township No. Fifty Prince Edward Island Farmer, being very sick and weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore; calling unto mind the mortality of the body, Knowing that it is appointed unto for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament, that is to say Principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, that gave it, and my body I Recommend to the Earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God, as at is touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form


First – I give and bequeath to Donald my son the sum of Twenty Pounds of lawful currency to be paid on the first day of November next.

Also I give to Ann my daughter two cows, Six sheep, and ten Pounds cash at any time she may demand the same. I also give to Margaret my Daughter two cows and Six sheep. To Catherine and Mary in like manner. Also to Catherine Beaton one Cow. I also bequeath to my beloved son Malcolm one half of my land, and the other half I bequeath to William my son should he request it on his return, in the Event of not claiming the same, my son Malcolm is to Enjoy all and Singular any foresaid tenements by him freely to be possessed – Should any of my daughters marry, the above mentioned Parties hereafter to be constituted my Executor are bound to Support them on the farm as long as they live.

I hereby constitute my sons Malcolm and William Docherty my Executors in This my last will and Testament -- In witness thereof I have hereunto set my Pen and Seal the day and year above written.

He married MARY MACLEOD, daughter of MALCOLM MACLEOD and EUPHEMIA MACDONALD. She was born 1790 in Isle of Skye, Scotland, and died April 25, 1843 in PEI, buried in St John's Presbyterian Church Cemetery, PEI.
