Disputed identity of Richard's wife

Richard1 Norman's wife was Florence _____; she is named in the Charminster, Dorset, England baptismal records of their children. She was not Florence Alford or Mary Alford, the latter of whom is said to have married at St. Giles in the Wood, Devon, England to a different man of the same name, see Richard Norman (1580-).

Biography

Cross of St George
Florence (Unknown) Norman was born in England.
Florence _____ was born by about 1587 (assumed age 20 at first marriage). Florence married Richard1 Norman before 1606/7 (child baptized). A record of their marriage has not been found, [1] but she and Richard had children baptized at Charminster, Dorset at least through 1619,[2] and possibly at Dorset, through 1622.[3]

Immigration

The details of Florence's immigration are not known. Richard1 Norman, is known to have been of Salem by 1626.[4][5] Given the ages of their children, Florence is presumed to have accompanied him or followed shortly.

At Massachusetts Bay

She is presumed the "wife of Richard Norman Sr."[6] who was a witness at Salem court, 9 July 1645, in the matter of Richard Cooke. Cooke was presented for "offering John Peach, sr. his neckcloth in exchange for his, and daring him into the woods."[7]

Family

Her husband was Richard1 Norman. Their children,[8]

Jonn Norman, baptized Charminster, Dorset, 7 February 1606/7.[9]
Elizabeth Norman, baptized Charminster, Dorset, 12 January 1610/11;[10] buried there, 23 April 1613.
Margaret Norman, baptized Charminster, Dorset, 4 February 1614/15.[11]
Susanna Norman, baptized Charminster, Dorset, 31 July 1617.[12]
Florence Norman, baptized Charminster, Dorset, 17 October 1619.[13]
Richard Norman, born about 1623 (he was about age 50 in 1673/4 and 1674). He is possibly the Richard Norman baptized Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester, Dorset, 1 September 1622.[14]
Research Notes

Marriage record not found. Leslie Mahler (2002) was unsuccessful in locating a marriage record for Richard Norman and wife Florence. No marriage record was found at Charminster, where Mahler notes, "if they were married in Charminster, the record does not survive, as the church registers and Bishops' Transcripts are both missing the marriages from 1598 to 1605. Mahler adds, "The marriages for Holy Trinity parish in the nearby town of Dorchester were searched, but their marriage was not found there either."[15]

Son Richard. He is possibly the Richard Norman baptized Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester, Dorset, 1 September 1622. See a transcribed baptismal record, Michael Russell, "Dorchester: Baptisms Holy Trinity Church 1618-1669"; web content, Dorset Online Parish Clerks; "Richard sonne of Richard [Norman]."

Erroneous identity on FindAGrave. As of 2021, Richard Norman, memorial 148404203 links to memorial of erroneous wife, Margaret Alford Norman, memorial 148404364. Further associates "Margaret" as the mother of Richard's children.
