1822 City Directory, New Orleans Verlion Dagruy, gentleman, 112 Mandeville bel. Craps

“[...] a Southern gentleman had to be a planter. Professional men [lawyers & doctors] were not regarded with favor, nor had the same prestige. When a sugar planter walked the streets of New Orleans with his cottonade britches, alpaca coat, panama hat and gold-headed cane, he was looked upon as the king of creation, and everybody bowed down to him. [A planter] spent most of his time between the plantation and New Orleans, leading the life of the average young gentleman of leisure of those days and making frequent trips to Europe to renew old friendships and acquaintances.” Laura Locoul Gore.
