About Francis Baker, of Yarmouth

Francis Baker

  • Gender: Male
  • Birth: circa 1615 - England
  • Death: July 23, 1696 (76-85) - Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts
  • Place of Burial: Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States
  • Parents: unknown
  • Spouse: married Isabel Twining (daughter of William Twining) in Yarmouth 17 Jun 1641, the first known marriage of record at Yarmouth.

The origin of this Francis Baker in England and the date of his arrival in New England have not yet been determined.

Sixteen days before his marriage the Plymouth court gave him permission to take in Old Yarmouth "any land not already occupied." Under this authority they settled near Follen's pond—at the head of Bass river—when the first white man's house at Nobscussett was less than two years old. Here they lived—he until 1696 and she until 1706—rearing a family of eight children. Their descendants are scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean.

Biography

Partially extracted from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baker-496 and https://www.familysearch.org/service/records/storage/das-mem/patron...

First record in New England is 1 Jun 1641 when he was admitted to dwell at Yarmouth, MA.[3]

He settled near Follens Pond, at the head of Bass River, in what was then Nobesussett Territory but now within the bounds of Dennis. At that time, the first white man's house at Nobseussett was less than two years old.[4]

Francis Baker and Isabel Twining, daughter of William Twining, were married, probably in Yarmouth, in 1641.

His occupation was being a cooper, although later he may also have been a blacksmith. On 7 Jun 1648 he was appointed as Surveyor of Highways in Yarmouth. In 1656 he was a member of the jury.

In 1653 he was in court for "selling wines without license." On 8 June 1655 John Hall of Yarmouth complained that Francis Baker was abusing his servant Samuel Hall, who was John Hall’s son, by kicking him and unreasonably striking him. The court took Samuel away, putting him in the custody of his father, and the father was to pay Francis Baker 8 pounds for Samuel's remaining term. There is no record of Francis being warned or fined.

In 1658 he had a grant of land in Eastham, Massachusetts lying near that of his father-in-law William Twining. It is not known if he actually ever resided in Eastham.

There is some speculation that Francis Baker "was not in full accord with the Puritan notions of the times" (Swift's History of Old Yarmouth). There were Quakers living in his neighborhood and one of the witnesses to his will was evidently such a Quaker neighbor.

Francis Baker died in Yarmouth, Massachusetts on 23 Jul 1696. He was survived by his wife.

He had written his will on 4 March 1692/1693. naming six children; sons John, Daniel, William & Thomas; daughters Elisabeth Chase and Hannah Pearse, and wife Jesball (Isabel). Sons Nathaniel and Samuel may have died before 1693.

Isabel is named as “Jesball,” and he leaves her his house and lands (meadow and uplands) at Yarmouth, his cattle and his moveable goods during her lifetime. Bequests of five shillings were given to each of his children. He left two shillings to his grandson Samuel, the eldest son of his son Nathaniel. All other real estate and moveable goods were given to his son Thomas. Thomas and the widow Isabel were named executors.

The inventory of his estate was taken on 24 Nov 1696 by Benjamin Gage and Isaac Chace and sworn to 8 Dec1696 by Thomas Baker of Yarmouth. The real estate, housing lands and meadow and orchard, had a value of £30.

His widow, Isabel, died in Yarmouth on 16 May 1706.

Family

Isabel Twining was born in England a daughter of William Twining and an unknown woman. Isabel immigrated with her parents to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, where in 1641, they were residents of Yarmouth, situated about thirty miles southeast of Plymouth.

On June 17, 1641, Isabel Twining married Francis Baker,[1][2] born in England about 1611. He is not the same Francis sailed from England aboard the ship Planter in 1635.[3] He went from Plymouth to Yarmouth, where he was permitted to dwell on June 1, 1641, a few days before Isabel and he were married. In 1659, Francis and Isabel were living in Eastham, on ten acres "lying upon Poche," near the land of Isabel's father.

Isabel died on 16 May 1706 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts as Francis Baker’s widow.

Children of Isabel Twining and Francis Baker:

  1. Nathaniel B. BAKER, b 27 Mar 1642-1691, lived in Yarmouth, married in Boston
  2. John BAKER, b abt 1645; married in 1670 to Alice Pierce, daughter of Abraham Pierce; d 1712
  3. Samuel BAKER, b 1 May 1648; probably died young; not named in father's will
  4. Daniel BAKER, 2-3 Sep 1650; married in 1674, at Yarmouth, Eliza Chase, daughter of William Chase
  5. William BAKER, b abt 1652; married in 1690, Mercy (?nee) He died in 1727 and his wife died in 1753
  6. Thomas BAKER; b 1654-5; married in 1699, Bathsheba (?nee) resided in Yarmouth
  7. Elizabeth BAKER, b 1656 married in 1699, John Chase
  8. Hannah BAKER, m. -- Pearce; married name Pease or Pierce

Disputed Origins

Updated 13 November 2022. Removed birth date in 1612 and location of St. Albans, Hertfordshire. That seems a mixup with speculative origins for the other Francis Baker.

Sometimes he is confused with a Francis Baker who was enrolled for emigrated in 1635. See reference by Robert Charles Anderson and the Sanborns in "The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634 - 1635" (New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, MA, 1999), Vol. 1, Pages 152/3.

Although a "Francis Baker" described as a "taylor" (tailor), aged 24, was enrolled in 1635 in London to sail on the ship Planter, Anderson and the Sanborns do not believe that he is the same person as the "Francis Baker, cooper" who was admitted to dwell at Yarmouth on 1 Jun 1641. They cite the difference in occupations and the lack of any references to a Francis Baker in the intervening years.

[4] His parents, are not actually known but it is thought to be one of two possibilities. First it is reported in the Colonial records that he was thought to be a brother of Nicholas Baker and Nathaniel Baker. That would make his parents Nicholas Baker, Il and Mary Frances Baker. It is possible that he was a son of John Baker and Margery Madestard Baker of Herfordshire, England. It is also possible that he is the son of [Thomas Baker who was christened 7 July 1612 at St James Clerkenwell, London. The date agrees exactly. Thomas's wife was Francis Ingram. They were married at St James Clerkenwell, 24 Aug 1592.

Added by Elwin Nickerson II- My Great Gradfather arrived at Boston on the "Planter" [NO] … He was thirty years of age, and probably had lived at Boston since the good ship Planter, in 1635, brought him from his birthplace, in Hartfordshire, Eng., to that port.
