About Francis Baker

Baptized in Great St. Albans, Herfordshire, England on 16 NOV 1611. Married Isabel Twining in Yarmouth, MA. on 17 JUN 1641. Their wedding was the first recorded in Yarmouth. Francis came to America on the Planter in 1635 aged 24. Ship landed in Boston APR 2, 1635. Listed as a tailor. Then in America worked as a farmer, a cooper, and a surveyor. Their home was near Tollens Pond at the head of the Bass River where they lived and died,

[4] His parents, are not actually known but it is thought to be one of two possibilities. First it is reported in the Colonial records that he was thought to be a brother of Nicholas Baker and Nathaniel Baker. It is possible that he was a son of John Baker and Margery Madestard Baker of Herfordshire, England. It is also possible that he is the son of [Thomas Baker who was christened 7 July 1612 at St James Clerkenwell, London. The date agrees exactly. Thomas's wife was Francis Ingram. They were married at St James Clerkenwell, 24 Aug 1592.

Arrived In Boston,Massachusetts On The "PLANTER"-

Added by Elwin Nickerson II- My Great Gradfather arrived at Boston on the "Planter"

He was thirty years of age, and probably had lived at Boston since the good ship Planter, in 1635, brought him from his birthplace, in Hartfordshire, Eng., to that port. Sixteen days before his marriage the Plymouth court gave him permission to take in Old Yarmouth "any land not already occupied." Under this authority they settled near Follen's pond—at the head of Bass river—when the first white man's house at Nobscussett was less than two years old. Here they lived—he until 1696 and she until 1706—rearing a family of eight children. Their descendants are scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean.
