About Francis Hackley
A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA (Soldier). DAR Ancestor #: A048928
Francis Hackley served in the 2d Virginia Regt under Col Wiiliam Byrd III during British Gen John Forbes successful campaign to capture Fort Duquesne in 1758. Col Washington was the commander of the 1st Virginia Regt and also the commander of the Colonial Forces during the campaign.
Per the website Find A Grave.com: Frances Hackley, son of James and Elizabeth Shippey Hackley, was born in King George County, Virginia. In 1740. He married Fanny Lightfoot, daughter of Major Goodrich Lightfoot and Susannah Slaughter in 1768 or 1769.
Francis and two of his brothers fought in the French and Indian Wars, served under Col. Washington; were with him at Braddock's defeat, and subsequently fought in the Revolutionary War until it was over. They moved to Kentucky in 1793 or 1795 with 9 children and settled on this land. A cabin was near this cemetery.
Photos taken in 1947 show both Francis and Fannie's stones and were at that time readable. Only one remains, and the inscription is gone.
