  • Prior to his marriage to Gertrude Hoting, Francis drew up a financial arrangement whereby Gertrude would be assurred of having, during her lifetime, the profits of two messuages, Dytton's in Methwold and Rebeckend in Hilgay, all told 320 acres of land; and 30 acres of meadow and pasture and 200 acres of marsh in Methwold, Hilgay, and Southery.
  • In his will dated 21st July 1536 Francis specified that he be buried in the Church of St. Marys Feltwell, in the middle of the Chapel of St. Katherine (now demolished).
    • He made the usual requests that a mass be sung for him, that monies be divided among the poor of the surrounding parishes, and in addition that this executors "find an honest preest to pray and syng for my soul and the sowles of my father and mother and of my father Thursbys sowle and Elizabeth his wife and of Margaret my wife and of Edmond Smeney and of all other ffriends and benefactors souls".
    • He made specific bequested to his wife Gertrude and his son Osbert - who as son and heir would inherit the bulk of the Mundeford estates.
    • Furthermore he wills certain items to his sons Edmund, Francis, Adam when they reach 21 year of age, and laeacies for his daughters Isabell, Dorothy, Mary, Anne, and Martha when they attain the age of 21.
    • In addition, Francis requests that each of his daughters be paid 60 pounds toward their respective marriages.
    • "And also I give unto the child that my wife is now wt be it son or daughter 60 pounds to be paid at the age of 21 years".
    • He also makes provision for the two daughters of his first wife, Jane Smewney and Margaret Smewney, as well as giving 60 pounds to his sister Elizabeth Moundeford.
    • The will was probated the 23rd of September 1536
  • Although few specific details of land holdings are not noted in the will of Francis Mundeford, they are described in more detail in the Inquisitions Post Mortem relating to his son Osbert.
    • In the Inquisition Post Mortem pertaining to Osbert, dated 30 September 1580, it was recorded that he possessed vast estates scattered around the area, most of all of which seem to have been inherited from his father.
    • These include the Manor of Welhall in Gayton and Holt in Norfolk, the vicarage of Gayton and the site of the late hospital and chapelry of St. Mary and St. Giles near the Isle of Slysham in the parish of Methwold, and all the houses buildings belonging to same, and one close containing 18 acres adjacent to he town of Methwold, and one messuage in Methwold Hythe in Methwold, and two "seminaris" containing 1 and 30 acres in diverse places in the fields of Methwold.
    • Furthermore he has one third of the Manor of Glosthorpe in Lexiard, Ashwicken and Gayton, and of 3 messuages and 260 acres of land, 20 acres of meadow, 60 acres of pasture and free grazing in Methwold.
    • Another holding was the Manor of Wendling Abbots in Feltwell, and one close called Owls Home Close lying in the town and fields of Feltwell, containing 14 acres, and of another close called Gannock Close in Feltwell containing 6 acres, and of land and testaments in Notrhwold.
    • Also he owned the Manor of Spynviles and Denton with appurtenances in Feltwell, and of diverse messuages and 600 acres of land, 40 acres of meadow, 100 acres of pasture, 200 acres of heath, 100/ - worth of rent and grazing rights in Feltwell, Hockwold, Wilton, and Methwold, and one messuage called Dyttons in Methwold and another messuage called Rebeckend in Hilgay and Southery, 20 acres of land, 30 acres of meadow and pasture, and 200 acres of marsh in Methwold, Hilgay and Southery.
  • The Inquisition Post Mortem dated the 29th March 1590 concerning Francis Mondeford, the son and heir of the above Osbert, detail virtually the same holdings, showing that they were inherited intact from his father.
    • There is a discrepancy between the children named in the will of Francis, and those recorded in the Herald's Visitation of 1563.
    • As to the will, Osbert mentioned sons Osbert and Edmond, and daughters Isabel, Dorothy, Mary, Anne, and Martha - and one child not yet born at the time of the writing of the will.
    • The Heralds recorded that the children by his first wife Margaret Thursday were Thomas, Osbert, and Adam. Children by his second wife Gertrude Hoting were Isabell, Mary, Francis, Dorothy, Mary, Edmond, and Adam.

  • Died 8 Aug 1536 [location unknown]

Name Francis, whose second name (and the Norfolk place name it is connected to, modern Mundford) is often spelled as Mondeford[1] or Mundeford[2], has an article on the history of parliament website, which spells his surname as Monford:[3]

Family and Education, From History of Parliament biography:

  • Born 1474/76, o. s. of Osbert Monford of Feltwell by Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Heath of Mildenhall, Suff. educ.
  • 1. Temple. m.

    • (2) Gertrude, daughter of Robert Hoting of London, ?wid. of Edmund Smewen or Smethwyn of London,
      • 3s.; 5da. suc. fa. 26 Dec. 1479 or 1 Jan. 1480[4].

  • J.p. Norfolk 1514 - death; commr. subsidy 1523, 1524; other commissions 1510-30; steward of sheriff’s ct. Norwich 1520-31, recorder 31 July 1531 - death; filacer, c.p. in 1524.[5]

Death and Will, From History of Parliament biography:

  • Monford died on 8 Aug. 1536. By his will of the previous 21 July he asked to be buried at Feltwell and provided for his second wife, his children and his step-children. He named his wife and his eldest son, then of full age, executors and his ‘brother’ William Coningsby (another of the sons-in-law of Thomas Thoresby) and Sir Thomas and Lady Bedingfield supervisors. He was succeeded as recorder of Norwich by Nicholas Hare.[6]
  • Note that his PCC will is indexed by Ancestry.com as Francis Mouneford, although the document itself consistently spells his surname with a "d". It mentions not only that he wants the souls of his parents prayed for, but also those of his "father Thursby" and "Elizabeth his wife", and "Margaret my wife and Edmond Smewyn and all other my frends and benefactors soules for whome I am most bounden to pray for". (These will all be deceased people.) It also mentions Gertrude who was his living wife when writing the will, and expected to survive him.
  • He mentions that Gertrude is expecting child at the time of writing the will.
  • He also mentions his "brother" William Coningsby several times, one time specifically asking him to be helpful to his widow. This William is the brother-in-law of his deceased wife, who married Beatrice Thursby.

Wives and Children

  • For his first wife's family see "Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica", 4th ser., 4:138-40.[7] Margaret's father Thomas Thoresby was a brother to the wife of John Fincham.
  • It appears to be difficult to be sure of the mothers of all the children. However the History of Parliament biography, and David Faux's Mundeforde webpage both follow the Suffolk visitation in this generation by allocating all the daughters to the second wife, Gertrude, while the son and heir Osbert was from the first marriage.
  • Margaret died in 1520, as stated on her memorial in Feltwell church. Francis' will was made 16 years later in 1536. It mentions son and heir Osbert, but also 8 children not yet 21: sons Edmund, Francis, Adam daughters Isabell, Dorothy, Mary, Anne, and Martha.
  • Concerning the children, genealogist David Faux remarks:[8]
    • There is a discrepancy between the children named in the will of Francis, and those recorded in the Herald's Visitation of 1563. [...] The Heralds recorded that the children by his first wife Margaret Thursby were Thomas, Osbert, and Adam. Children by his second wife Gertrude Hoting were Isabell, Mary, Francis, Dorothy, Mary, Edmond, and Adam. It is difficult to reconcile these differences."
  • Gertrude seems to be the same as Gertude Howtyng, mentioned as a daughter by Robert Howtyng, citizen and fishmonger, in his PCC will, made 27 Aug 1506, proved 3 Sep 1506.[9] He also seems to be mentioned in the Bede Roll of the Fraternity of St Nicholas,[10] and some other records as a creditor.[11] His son and heir seems to be named William.[12] * His will names his parents as Thomas and Elianor. It also seems Gertrude had an older sister Isabell, and a younger sister Johane. His wife's name was Margaret. There are also references to the Howtyngs including Thomas, Robert and William in the churchwarden's accounts of St Mary At Hill, the church mentioned in Robert's will.[13]
  • The HOP biography seems uncertain about Gertrude's first husband Edmund Smewyn. He also had a PCC will, in 1521[14] He was another London citizen, in his case a haberdasher. Like Howting he appears in the Bede Roll of the Fraternity of St Nicholas.[15] His connection seems confirmed by
    • His mention of his wife Gertrude (who is expected to outlive him but is not his first wife, because he wanted to be buried with Edith his late wife).
    • Although Francis Moundeforde is not mentioned in the will he appears in later legal records as an executor, but together with his wife Gertrude. Edmund's wife Gertrude, an unusual name, was an executor named in the will, along with Thomas Aleyn, skinner and citizen, who also appears in both the will and in legal cases.[16]
    • A document on a Feltwell website, drawn from old research by one A. J, Orange seems to show evidence of marriage contracts: "About two years after Margaret's death, Francis married Gertrude Smewen, a widow and daughter of Robert Hoting, a London merchant. It was customary to draw up a financial arrangement prior to marriage and before marrying Gertrude, Francis settled on her. For life, the profits of two messuages, Dytton's in Methwold and Rebeckend in Hilgay, 320 acres of land, 30 acres of meadow and pasture and 200 acres of marsh in Methwold, Hilgay and Southery."[17]
    • Francis mentions his wife Gertrude's two daughter Jane and Margaret Smewen who each inherited ten marks.
