Hopp was best friends with LaMonte Lyon when he was in grade school. They both attended District #9, Ash Grove, a one-room school at the corner of 141 Road and K Road, north of Holdrege, NE. They both loved playing baseball. And Hopp loved to hunt rabbits and pheasants. I asked LaMonte if he knew how Hopp got his nickname. He said that while Hopp and his family lived at Funk, NE, before moving back to live north of Holdrege (across the road to the east from Holcomb Church) that the family bought Hopp a new pair of pants (or suit, he wasn't sure which). At that time there was a China man named Hopp who owned a laundry in Funk. When Hopp wore the new pants/suit he looked like the China man, so he got the nickname, Hopp which stuck forever. Probably the only person that continued to call him "Roger" was his mom and maybe his dad.
