Francis Wylie Scott Sr.

In the early morning hours on Monday, January 28, 2008, the gracious and almighty Lord whispered in the ear of Francis Wylie Scott, Sr. and called him home to his eternal rest. He was born in Esmont, Virginia on August 26, 1923, the fourth of six children to the Rev. Isaac and Mary Scott, who preceded him in death. He attended public schools in Albemarle County, Virginia, and further studied at Virginia Seminary College in Lynchburg, Virginia and Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Drafted into the Armed Services in 1942, he spent three and a half years in Foreign Service and was honorably discharged in 1946. Francis then became a successful insurance agent, beginning with the Charlottesville District of Richmond Beneficial, being promoted quickly to Manager of the Roanoke district, which led to his relocation from Esmont to Roanoke in 1964. Upon his retirement, he was the Vice President of Universal Life Insurance Company. Before moving to Roanoke, Francis was a deacon and trustee at the New Hope Baptist Church in Esmont, Virginia. He was very active in Esmont as a Mason and a Scout Master. When Francis relocated to Roanoke, Virginia, he and his family joined the High Street Baptist Church. There, he served on the Deacon Board, Finance Ministry, Saints Committee, and Male Chorus for over 30 years. He then became a part of God's House Baptist Ministry, in 2004, where he faithfully served on the Finance Ministry, Deacon's Ministry, Male Chorus, Mass Choir, and in many other advisory capacities. Francis will be most remembered for his own style of information gathering and organization. He was a wonderful historian. Any person, topic, or event, he could turn to a page in one of his many 3-ring binders and give you the name, date, and exact moment. He might even have a picture or two. He was a devoted family man and friend; he never met a stranger. Many people referred to him as "Papa" or "Daddy Scott". Francis was also preceded in death by his devoted love, his wife of 50 years, Rachael Ann Paige Scott; daughter, Bertha J. Scott Barrow; and a grandson, Joseph Wylie Barrow. Those left to cherish the memory of this pillar of the community are his children, Francis W. (Janet) Scott, Jr., Ann Marie Scott Payne, Michael N. (Gloria) Scott, and the Rev. Dr. Isaac L. Scott, all of Roanoke, Alphonso R. (Carol) Scott, of Gotha, Fla., Lynda Scott (William) Taylor, of Springfield, Va., and Jacqueline (Ernest) Poe, of Chesapeake, Va.; his grandchildren, Rosilyn (Ephraim) Bethel, of Columbus, Ga., Shannon Starkey, of Roanoke, Allen Barrow, of Memphis, Tenn., Francis W. Scott III, William Taylor III, and Stephanie Taylor, all of Springfield, Va., Janet Scott, Michael Scott, Cecil Scott, Alisha Scott, and Phillip Scott, all of Roanoke, Tia Scott, of Seat Pleasant, Md., Ernest (Karissa) Poe, of Ft. Rucker, Ala., and Almika Poe and Sean Poe, both of Chesapeake, Va.; brothers, Monroe D. Scott and Isaac A. Scott III; his sisters, Madolia Scott Chambers, of Esmont, Va., and Harriet Mary Janet Scott (Alden) Coleman, of Columbus, Ohio; his brother Joseph W. (Marie) Scott, of Charlotte, N.C.; brother-in-law, Benjamin F. (Lorraine) Paige, of Esmont, Va.; sister-in-law, Sarah Paige-Porter, of Philadelphia, Pa.; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The Roanoke service will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008, with the wake at 6 p.m. and funeral at 7 p.m. at God's House Baptist Ministry, with the Rev. Dr. Floyd W. Davis officiating. The Esmont service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008, with the wake at 11 a.m. and funeral at noon at the New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. H. H. Long officiating. Interment will be at the New Hope Baptist Church. Arrangements by Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.
