About Francis C. Speight
Son of Captain William Speight, Francis was named after his grandfather who was the first Speight in America and was called "Francis of Sunbury". He inherited his father's plantation in Sunbury in 1719. In 1721 he married Kathern Grimes (born in 1690). Francis accumulated over 300 acres of land along the Contentnea Creek in Chowan, Jones and Craven Counties (now Greene County) in North Carolina. 1742 census shows 5 whites and 7 blacks in household. In 1748 their son John's wife died and Kathern moved in to take care of her son and her 3 grandchildren.
Francis Speight died at age 65 in 1749. He left specific instructions in his will that the slaves on his plantation were not to be sold or separated from the land. He left his plantation to his son Moses with his son John allowed to live on it until he remarried. His son Joseph inherited the Sand Banks plantation near the state line. William had some formal education as he was able to sign his name on his will. Kathern Speight remarried (name unknown).
Children: John (1722-1783), Joseph (1725-1792), Anna (Freeman) (1727-1788), Moses (1730-179?) and Honore (Hare) (1733-?)
