JOSEPH SPEIGHT – Joseph Speight was born 1710. He married first, Ann Gatling. He married 2nd, in Chowan County, North Carolina, Ann King, in 1752. Joseph Speight’s children by Ann Gatling were:

4. Francis Speight – born about 1745. He married Penelope.

Joseph Speight’s second wife was Ann King. They were married in Chowan County, North Carolina in 1752. Their children were:

6. Josiah Speight – born 1753. Josiah married Eleanor Bond in Chowan County. He died 1783.

In 1740 Joseph moved to Contentnea Creek, NC with father Francis and brother John to work a land grant purchased for John. Later he and his father returned to Chowan County (now Gates County). In 1749 he inherited half of his father's estate along with 7 slaves. In 1751 Joseph's brother John built Speights Bridge over the Contentnea Creek in Dobbs County, NC and for years collected tolls. The community was renamed Speights Bridge and is still in existence today.

Joseph married Anne King (1735-1795) in 1752 and was elected vestryman of St. Paul's Parish on Edenton. Joseph and Anne raised 14 children on their plantation. When the French & Indian War broke out In 1754 Joseph and his brother John enlisted as privates in the local Chowan County Militia. They were the first SPEIGHTs to serve in the military and fought under Captain Charles King. In the 1760's Joseph and family left the plantation and built a house in Hertford County. Joseph maintained the county roads and surveyed land for tax purposes.

Joseph Speight enlisted in the Continental Army in 1777 and fought in the American Revolutionary War for 7 years as a Lieutenant under Col. Francis Corbin in Company 1 of the North Carolina Regiment. His sons Francis, Seth and Samuel also served during the Revolutionary War. In 1778 he purchased 2,820 acres in Dobbs County for his sons William, Seth and Samuel. In 1783 Joseph and sons Henry and Francis constructed a gristmill near Beaverdam Creek called March's Mill. Joseph was awarded 640 acres of land in 1792 in Chowan County for his military service where he lived until his death at age 67 in 1792.
