A Patriot of the American Revolution for SOUTH CAROLINA (Soldier). DAR Ancestor # A124116
FRANCIS WHELCHEL, JR.
Although some researchers show Francis with the middle name of Marion, there are no primary records (e.g., passenger lists, census records, deed records, land grant records, church records, military records, court records or will records) that show his name as Francis Marion Whelchel or Francis M. Whelchel. He was born in about 1715 when middle names were very uncommon. There are also no primary records that show his son Francis as either Francis Marion Whelchel or Francis M. Whelchel.
The Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox" made "Francis Marion" a very popular first and middle name combination, but this was not until AFTER the Revolutionary War. It appears that researchers have found POST Revolutionary War descendants of Francis and Martha Ann (nee Stockton) Whelchel that were named "Francis Marion Whelchel" and decided that Francis Whelchel (c.1715-1796) was named Francis Marion Whelchel.
Some researchers show Francis Whelchel Sr., who died in 1796, and his son Francis Whelchel Jr., as Francis Marion Whelchel. There are no records that show either as Francis Marion Whelchel. The name Francis Marion Whelchel in reference to this father and son appears to be fiction.
