He enlisted as a Revolutionary War soldier on May 25, 1778. He served in the Ninth Regiment of The North Carolina Line under Captain John Farrow, until he was succeeded by Captain Goodman, then under Major Robert Nelson, Colonel Archibald Lytte (Replaced by Colonel William Thaxton) and Brigadier General Ash.
Although he enlisted for 9 months, he served for 12 before he was discharged. The regiment rondezvoused at Hillsborough, Orang Co., NC. They were engaged in the Battle of Bryer (Briar) Creek, and in frequent skirmishes with the Tories and British, and marched through North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. He was discharged by Captain Goodman at Black Swampian, SC.
Soon after receiving his discharge, he enlisted for another term of 2 months in the Home Troops, serving under Captain Joshua Coffee, Major Taylor and Colonel Philip Taylor.
