Records show several Wingler/Winkler families owned land in the Potts Creek section of North Carolina from 1776 to 1830. Potts Creek is located northeast of Salisbury, North Carolina. Records also show the first Winklers/Winglers arrived in Philadelphia, Pa. in the year 1754 from Rotterdam, Holland on the ship EDINBOUGH. They settled in the Harrisburg, Pa. area. About 1775-1776 Ludwig and his family moved to the Potts Creek section of N.C. and entered public land. It was during 1776-1730 the name Winkler was changed to Wingler due, perhaps, to the misspelling by court clerks and the Americanizing of the name. The next records found the Winklers splitting up but most of them settled in the mountains north of North Wilksboro, North Carolina with the exception of Francis Wingler and his family... they braved the wilderness and hardships to travel by wagon-train to Indiana. They settled in Washington County in 1824 on a farm 7 miles southwest of Salem, Indiana near Becks Mill. The old mill is still there and is owned by heirs of George Beck who settled in this area about 1808. The Wingler house and barn was still standing in 1967. There is a Wingler cemetery on the North East corner of the old home place where many of the old timers were laid to rest. Less
