Frank was a proud graduate of East High School class of 1946. After high school Frank was a fire observer/meteorologist in Idaho. He entered the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a meteorologist in Greenland. Using the GI Bill, he attended Iowa State University where he met the love of his life, Janet Newsum. He graduated with a degree in mathematics and teaching. Frank and Janet were married on December 24, 1955. Dad joked that he always attended church on his anniversary. They settled in Carlisle, Iowa where they lived until three years ago. Frank earned his master’s degree in mathematics from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1960. Frank taught high school math at Carlisle from 1956 to 1968. Then he taught for two years at East High, then Kurtz Junior High and finished his teaching career at Harding Middle School in Des Moines, IA. Dad could not stay retired as he then taught for DMAAC for the next twenty years.
Frank worked the summers at Bituminous Supply as the bookkeeper. He was a member of the Carlisle Lion’s Club, Masonic Lodge, Boy Scout Leader, Mayor of Carlisle during the late 1960’s. He was the official score keeper for Carlisle athletics for 50 years. Dad even had the privilege to be the official score keeper at the 1967 Girls State basketball tournament when Carlisle placed fourth. Dad was a member of the Carlisle United Methodist Church where he was the treasurer for over 20 years.
Dad loved his music, especially jazz, classical and musical theater, NOT pop music. He was a voracious reader, often reading four books at the same time. He loved volunteering and being a mentor to young people, as in Kid’s Hope USA. Dad cherished his family and God.
