About Franklin A (Frank) Fellows
Worthington is called to mourn the loss of one of her most estimable citizens. Word has been received that Frank A. FELLOWS died last Monday at Phoenix, Arizona, whither he had gone on August 22 for the benefit of his health.
For three years he had been in failing health of lung trouble and it was at last decided to try the climate of the far west to see if his life could not be prolonged and although he did seem to improve for a time after his arrival there, yet there was no permanent triumph of the dread disease and death came as a welcome messenger of relief.
For ten years preceding 1888 he was a clerk in the hardware firm of S. R. HARRAH and C. N. SHAW. In 1888 he and Will HARRAH bought out the firm and it continues to the present under the name of HARRAH & FELLOWS. In business he possessed the strictest integrity, lived up to the principles of the Golden Rule in his every day dealings with his fellow men, and in all things conducted himself as becomes a man of honor–and prosperity came to him from the first and continued with him throughout these years.
At the age of thirteen he united with the M. E. church at Mt. Zion, near Mineral, and continued during life steadfast in the faith. He was recognized as a devout worshiper who loved righteousness and hated iniquity. For a while he was superintendent of the M. E. Sunday-school at Worthington and at the time of his death he was treasurer of the board of stewards in that church. He was also serving his second term as treasurer of the school board. In politics he always adhered to the principles of the Republican party.
He married Mattie WELKER, stepdaughter of Dr. W. B. SQUIRE, and she together with her four children was with him in the hour of death.
The funeral will take place at Worthington; the time is not definitely known, but perhaps Sunday. Will HARRAH expects to go to Chicago in the morning (Friday) to meet the remains and when they arrive at that city he will telegraph to Worthington the exact time of the funeral.
Why one so useful, with such a capacity for doing good and with so many opportunities for bettering his community, should thus be stricken down in the very prime of life, he was only forty-three, is beyond our power to understand. But it is God's way.
