A newspaper clipping says that he "served three years in the Seventh Ohio infantry. He was under age when he ran away to enlist, but he chalked the figures 18 on the soles of his boots and, when he was asked his age by the recruiting officer, he replied—I'm over eighteen." The official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, War of the Rebellion, vol. 2, page 204, contains the following record: Seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A ; Rockefeller, Franklin G.; private; age 18; date of entering the service, Sept. 20, 1861; period of service, 3 years. He was wounded in the battles of Chancellorsville and Cedar Mountain.

He is largely interested in iron mining in the Northwest and stock raising in the Southwest. His offices are in the Garfield Building, Cleveland. ; he was also a VP of Standard Oil.
