OF FRENCH ANCESTRY
According to family tradition handed down by John Jacob Clemmer/Clymer (b. 1763), the Clemmers were of the Reformed faith and once lived in Montbeliard, France, on the Swiss border, but fled to Afoltern, Zurich, Switzerland at the time of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
THE ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S DAY MASSACRE, 1572 The ongoing religious disputes between the Roman Catholics and the Huguenots (French Protestants) eventually erupted into mass hysteria. On St. Bartholomew's Day, August 24, 1572, several Huguenot leaders were murdered in Paris. The killing spread in a wave of mob violence that lasted for three months and engulfed other towns, including Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lyon, Bourges, Rouen, and Orleans. In the end, it is estimated that 2,000 Huguenots were killed in Paris and 3,000 in other places, though some exaggerated reports put the death toll at more than 100,000. Many Huguenots fled to England, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, and America.
Variations of the surname include Clemmer, Klemmer, Clymer, and Klymer.
