About Franziska Thannhauser
Fanny was a very beautiful and clever woman. She went to a private Catholic School and was very artistic and good at sewing, making many of her own clothes. She was from a middle class Catholic background and her husband from an upper class Jewish family. Both families were against the marriage but after 9 years (partially due to WWI) they married.
She had a serious admirer in the manager of the Nymphenbourg china factory, Felix Baumel. She helped him select colors for styles reissued. She had an enormous collection of white Nymphenbourg china much of which her descendants still have today.
Family lore has it that she ran gold into Switzerland regularly during the years before they left Germany.
A favorite family story is that when it came time to leave Germany in 1935 they needed to pass by an auditor who asked her "Where did all the money go?" To which she batted her big blue eyes and said "Och, my husband asks me the same question!" This worked and they were able to emigrate.
My favorite memories of her are gardening with her. Planting bulbs with her. I loved her garden at Ivy St in Brookline, MA. In her later years she mainly lay on her daybed in the garden room while I played nearby. I knew her as a gracious and loving grandmother (note by Kitty Cooper)
More about her is written on her granddaughter's family history site at http://kittymunson.com/index.php?page=reiner-family
