Titanic victim. Fred R. Kenyon, son of Jeremiah A. Kenyon, at one time Southington's only furniture dealer and undertaker, graduated from Lewis High School. He took up stenography and typewriting. He went to work for Wilmot & Hobbs of Bridgeport where he became private manager to the senior member. In this way he obtained an insight into cold-rolled steel and tube business, of which the concern were pioneers.

He went to the Pittsburg steel section where he worked for various concerns. With a friend he opened a steel mill at West Leetsburg, which proved a very successful venture. He sold to one of the larger competitors, making a big profit, which enabled him to retire.

With his wife he removed to Groton, Conn. Subsequently they toured Europe. He had engaged passage for the return trip home, but afterwards booked on the ill-fated steamer "Titanic." He and his wife, Marion, boarded the Titanic at Southampton as first class passengers (ticket number 17464, £51 17s 3d). They occupied cabin D-21.

When it was sinking his wife with other women passengers was put into a small boat and saved, while, with many other brave men, Mr. Kenyon perished.

He died intestate and his property was divided between his widow and his brother, Jerry A. Kenyon. He was 41 years old.

Jerry Kenyon died on Nov. 23, 1914. In his will were several public bequests, including the sum of $1,000 to be used for the purpose of procuring and placing a "medallion, tablet or other suitable memorial to be dedicated upon by the Alumni association of [Lewis High School], in memory of my brother, Frederick R. Kenyon, who lost his life in the Titanic disaster at sea, and therefore has an unmarked grave."

Mr. Kenyon also bequeathed the sum of $10,000 to the town of Southington "to be held in a trust as a trust fund and known as ‘The Frederick R. Kenyon Fund,' the yearly income to be expended in assisting worthy poor children to complete a course in the Lewis High School…"

Mr. Kenyon also left $5,000 as a trust fund to hold in perpetual trust to the Quinnipiac Cemetery Association in order to care for the Kenyon family burial plot and the general care of the cemetery.

The ornate bronze tablet honoring Frederick Kenyon was moved in 1950 from Lewis High School on Academy Street to the library of the then-new Southington High School. It remains there, though the school is now Walter A. Derynoski Elementary School. It reads, "In Memory of Frederick R. Kenyon – Lost In the Titanic Disaster – April 15th, 1912 – He Died That Others Might Live – 1871-1912"
