"...Frikkie became the landdrost [magistrate] of Pretoria in 1861.
"In 1866 he was appointed landdrost of Heidelberg. After the annexation of the Transvaal Maré refused to take the oath of loyalty to the British government and resigned his position. He was reappointed to his position in 1882 and served as landdrost until his death in 1895."
