About Friedrich B. Dirks
Born in Karolswalde, on the Ukraine/Russian border, near the city of Ostrog. Freidrich was among the thousands of Mennonites who immigrated to America in 1874. They left their farms, live stock and homes behind and went by wagon to the nearest train station. From there they traveled to Hamburg, Germany and sailed in to England.
From this point the ships captain made up the immigration manifest for US Immigration officials in America. They sailed on the SS City of London from Liverpool, England and landed in New York harbor on November 18, 1874. Freidrich and Helena Dirks had 2 children with them (Susanna,and Maria). Tobias had passed away in Karolswalde at a young age.
Their other children were Henry, Katharina, Elizabeth, Benjamin, and Amelia were born in America at Avon, South Dakota
Freidrich's parents were Benjamin and Katherine (Unruh) Dirks both buried in Karolswalde, Ukraine/Russian border. Other children of Benjamin and Katherine (Unruh) Dirks were;
1/ Heinrich Dirks married Eva Jantz and had 9 children. 2/ Catharina Dirks died in 1856 in Russia at age 13 3/ Tobias Dirks married Helena Boese and had 8 children. 4/ Johann Dirks married Anna Schmidt and had 2 children. 5/ Helena Dirks married Bernard Unruh and had 11 children. 6/ Susanna Dirks married Henry Unruh and had 10 children. 7/ Anna Dirks died in Russia in 1857 at age 1 8/ Cornelius Dirks (no record exists) Died in Russia?
