About Friedrich "Fritz" Neurath, Dr. Ing.

Birth year per genteam.at Index of the Jewish Records of Vienna:

  • 1872 Num. 3708. Friedrich had a twin brother, Isidor, Num. 3707.

Birth day/date appears on list of Austrians with bank accounts @ time of the Holocaust at www.avotaynu.com/holocaustlist . Parents resided Voslau, Bahnstrasse 9 [WEW]

Attended K. k. Ersten Staatsrealschule im II. Bezirke, Wien (see Kaller 1905.pdf "'Festschrift zur Erinnerung an den 50 jahrigen Bestand der K. k. Ersten Staatsrealschnle im II. Bezirke (Vereinsgasse 21) im Wien'"], in SOURCES; page 69 of the volume). Friedrich Neurath finished with Class of 1889 (went on to become a chemical engineer). In 1885, 11-year-old Arnold Schönberg had "enrolled in the K.k. imperial secondary school in the Vereinsgasse." "Arnold Schönberg prudently left Germany for the United States in 1933, but continued to correspond with friends who remained behind, including Dr Emil Lemberger and Fritz Neurath. Neurath's bookplate also bears the name of his wife Olga, a mathematician {this is incorrect--Fritz Neurath's wife Olga was not the mathematician named Olga Hahn Neurath}. [Neurath] too was a Holocaust victim, but the fate of his wife is not known." {This is incorrect; Dr. Ing. Friedrich Neurath emigrated to England and died there in 1953}. -- From an article on antiquarian bookplates in the collection of the State Library of Victoria, Australia at http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-84/t1-g-t7.html.

Friedrich "Fritz" Neurath married Olga Kanitz on June 13, 1909 (per WEW) location: Tempelgasse, per genteam.at. Dr. Fritz and Olga Neurath commissioned bookplates for their collection (see in MEDIA). Their Vienna apartment was at Wien, 1. Bez., Aspernplatz 1 on the Ring (since 1976, Julius-Raab-Platz, overlooking Aspernbrücke crossing the Danube Canal), between Franz-Josefs-Kai and Uraniastraße. The Aspernplatz area "was built when Franz Josef's barracks were demolished in 1900-1901, and a new district could be built."

The Neuraths' country home was in Dornbach (Wien XVII), Andergasse 52 (see in Media).

His personal letterhead says "Ingenieur Dr. Friedrich Neurath"; he was a chemist and metallurgy engineer with a Ph.D. (1895) from Berlin, and "Gesellschafter der Firma Michael Neurath (per WEW). Appears in Wiener Grossbürgertum im Ersten Weltkrieg, p. 231, as "engineer and chemist."

In 1926, appears in Adolph Lehmann's allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger [Namenverzeichnis] Alphabetisches Verzeichnis der Einwohner along with numerous other Neuraths. Another Fritz Neurath is listed, who was a bookkeeper / tax accountant; the bookkeeper was charged with tax evasion and fraud in November of 1926 (Wiener Sonn- und Montags-Zeitung, November 22, 1926, page 8).

After Olga's death in 1926, Friedrich Neurath married Winifred Elsie Zepper (b. 6/28/1897-d. 1979 in London). "Winifred (aka Dee in her family) was living in Austria and working as a governess to a family known to the Neuraths. Erika was the only child of Fritz and Dee. Because Dee was British they were able to apply for refugee status more easily and arrived in England in July 1939, just before the start of hostilities. The story goes that Erika remembered seeing Hitler pass beneath the window of their apartment in Vienna in his white open-top Mercedes. Some time after, the SS came one afternoon to arrest father, but fortunately he was out at the time." (MH)
