About Fumiko Harris

Fumiko Ohno Harris, 81, of Pensacola passed away 21 March, 2008 in Pensacola, FL following a short fight with cancer. Born and reared in Kobe, Japan, she moved to Yokosuka, Japan in 1950 during the Occupation of Japan, and was employed by the US Navy as a translator/secretary. She married Chief Petty Officer Harry B. Harris, USN, in 1955. Following her husband's retirement from the Navy in 1958, the family, including their 2-year old son, moved to Crossville, TN where they lived for 10 years. In 1968, they moved to Pensacola. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Iwakazu Ohno; three sisters, Tomoko, Tense, and Noriko; and her husband. She is survived by her sisters, Keiko and Yukiko; many nieces and nephews; and her son, Vice Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., USN. Fumiko was a member of Jordan Street Central, and Northside Churches of Christ. She was active in the Pensacola Japanese Ladies Club. She enjoyed traveling throughout the US and abroad, visiting her son's military postings. She returned to Japan several times in the 80s and 90s. She was especially proud of her American citizenship.
