About Gérard de Forest
Gerard was a dyer as was his brother Jesse. He was quite fortunate having invested in the fur trading post of Van Rensselaer near Fort Orange (now Albany, NY) to the extent that he appears in a notarized contract witnessed by the notary van den Ven on August 8, 1636.

Note: Gerard was a dyer as was his brother Jesse. He was quite fortunate having invested in the fur trading post of VanRensselaer near Fort Orange (now Albany, N.Y.) to the extent that he appears in a notarized contract witnessed by the notary Van Den Ven on August 8, 1636. Gerard had signed a contract to finance half the cost of establishing the settlement of Fort Orange. This colonial initiatige was under the leadership of Killaen Van Rennsselaer. According to J.W. DeForest, the probate records of The Hague indicate that the estate of Gerard de Forest, widower of Hester de la Grange, was partitioned on June 7, 1656. His heirs are listed as Crispin de Forest, Sara deForest, widow of Barent von de Kaskelen, and David de Toit, husband of Hester de Forest. They divided an estate valued at 15,325 florins.
