Gabriel Baubeau was a French Huguenot living in St. Sauvant, France. His name appeared, in 1681, on a list of those sentenced to death for their religion. Also on this list were his wife Catherine Rivault and three sons, Gabriel (age 30), Laurence (age 25) and Jean (age 24). The entire family appears on a second list, also dated 1681, as those recanting their Huguenot beliefs.
Some believe that Gabriel and family escaped to England and, from there, to Virginia. Gabriel the son does appear on a transportation list in 1700, with seven other people, who may or may not have been family. No proof has surfaced to show that his parents also came to Virginia. In fact, many web trees confused the facts about the two Gabriels, having the son married to his own mother.
